海克尔：科学家中的艺术家，艺术家中的科学家
一、海克尔的一生
恩斯特·海克尔（Ernst Haeckel, 1834—1919）于1834年2月16日出生在德国波茨坦一个生活条件优裕的家庭。父亲卡尔·海克尔是一名律师，也是德意志联邦梅泽堡宗教与教育事务管理机关的首席顾问，母亲是柏林枢密院一个官员的女儿。
海克尔的青少年时代是在梅泽堡度过的。在一位家庭教师的引导下，他很早就开始观察大自然。在中学阶段，海克尔沉迷于收集各种植物的样本，并且给它们逐一做上标记，绘制图像。他曾经创办过一个植物标本室，收集有近12000种植物标本，这些标本具有相当大的科学价值。当时，洪堡、达尔文等人关于科学探险的书籍，对海克尔的影响也很大。海克尔十分爱好植物学，在读了耶拿大学植物学教授施莱登（Matthias Schleiden, 1804—1881）所写的通俗读物《植物及其生活方式》之后，海克尔便开始向往在中学毕业后去耶拿大学跟随施莱登研究植物学，然后再争取像洪堡和达尔文那样，进行探险旅行，到热带森林里去考察和研究植物。
然而，海克尔的父母却希望他成为一名出色的医生。1852年，海克尔中学毕业后不得不放弃去耶拿大学攻读植物学的计划，先后进入维尔茨堡大学、柏林大学、维也纳大学攻读医学，但他始终对医学提不起兴趣。
一开始，对医学的厌恶和对植物学的热爱，强烈地影响着海克尔的情绪。然而大学生活毕竟已经为他展示了一个更为广阔的天地。在1852—1858年这6年的大学学习中，海克尔曾受教于比较解剖学家和胚胎学家克里克（Albert Kölliker,1817—1905）、动物学家莱丁（Franz Leydig,1821—1908），由此逐渐对比较解剖学、胚胎学和显微镜观察发生了浓厚的兴趣。尤其是当德国科学院院士、解剖学和生理学教授缪勒（Johannes Müller, 1801—1858）成为他的老师之后，海克尔便决心以这个“公认的权威”作为自己终生的“科学楷模”。
缪勒的教学和科研领域相当广泛，为生命科学许多分支学科的发展都作出过卓著的贡献。当时缪勒主要致力于海洋动物学的研究。在缪勒的指导下，海克尔很快就进入这门新兴学科。1854年，海克尔曾陪同缪勒到北海的黑尔戈兰岛（Heligoland）一带进行短期旅行，对那里的低等海洋动物作过考察。1857年，海克尔完成了他的博士论文《论河虾的组织》，并在柏林大学通过了答辩，获得医学博士学位。1858年3月，海克尔在柏林又通过了国家医学考试，取得了行医执照。当时，海克尔打算就此告别医学，继续留在缪勒手下进行比较解剖学和动物学的研究。然而遗憾的是，1858年4月缪勒不幸辞世，于是海克尔不得不离开柏林，到维尔茨堡医院当起了实习医生。显然，这对于海克尔来说是一件极为痛苦的事情。
事情的转机发生在这年夏天，海克尔去耶拿大学看望该校动物学教授盖根鲍尔（Karl Gegenbaur，1826—1903）。这位早在1853年于维尔茨堡大学结识的解剖学家，十分同情海克尔的境遇，他答应要为海克尔在耶拿大学争取一个职位。
1859年1月，海克尔在说服父亲准许他休假一年以后，赴地中海西西里岛进行考察旅行，在这里他继承了缪勒对墨西拿海域放射虫的研究工作。1860年春，海克尔带了144种新发现的放射虫，从意大利返回德国，在柏林一边对它们进行命名和分类，一边为撰写专题论文而准备材料。在这期间，海克尔阅读了当时轰动学界的达尔文名著《物种起源》，立即接受了达尔文的进化理论。
1861年3月，按照盖根鲍尔的建议，海克尔以一篇最新完成的论文《论根足虫纲动物的界限和目》向耶拿大学医学院（当时由创立细胞理论的施莱登教授主持）申请授课资格，并获通过。此后，在盖根鲍尔的支持下，海克尔很快就获得了耶拿大学比较解剖学讲师职位。1861年4月，海克尔登台授课伊始，就向学生郑重声明：作为动物学家，他的教学工作旨在介绍自然科学的研究方法，即介绍如何发现问题和解决问题，而不是搬弄那些枯燥无味的事实材料。学生们很敬佩这位老师。
1862年，海克尔受聘为耶拿大学哲学系动物学副教授，1865年受聘为教授，并担任动物博物馆馆长职务。从此，动物学在德国不再从属于医学而开始成为一门独立的学科。
在耶拿大学担任教授期间，海克尔曾多次外出旅行，进行科学考察。他先后去过大西洋的加那利群岛（1866—1867）、红海（1873）、印度半岛东南海面的锡兰岛（1881—1882，现为斯里兰卡）、印度尼西亚的爪哇岛（1900—1901）等地。
1902年2月，海克尔从耶拿大学退休，停止了教学工作，不过他仍在耶拿的德国种系发生博物馆（第一个宣传生物进化理论的博物馆）继续从事研究工作和进行一系列社会活动。海克尔是一个十分活跃的科学家和社会活动家，他不仅写了大量的科学著作、作了大量的通俗科学演讲，而且还参加过许多科学社团，其中包括许多国际性的科学学会和科学院。海克尔的杰出贡献为他赢得了诸多荣誉称号。
1919年8月9日，这位力图用科学之光烛照宇宙之谜的辛勤学者，在耶拿的宅邸中结束了一生辛勤的探索，永远离开了他钟爱的科学事业。
二、海克尔的科学贡献
海克尔的科学贡献主要包括三个方面：三界说、原肠祖论、生物发生律。
作为一个动物学家，海克尔早期主要研究海洋原生物（如放射虫）、海绵动物、腔肠动物（如水母、管水母）、棘皮动物等，其工作领域包括了形态学、分类学及胚胎学。显然，这是受到了老师缪勒的影响。

自19世纪上半叶开始，人类对自然界的认识已有了较为全面的进展，而此后达尔文所奠立的生物进化论（1859）则冲击了包括生命科学在内的几乎所有的实证科学，科学研究的思想方法也由此发生了一次根本性的改变。海克尔不仅始终是在达尔文进化理论的影响下展开自己在动物学方面的科学工作，而且他还对传播达尔文主义作出了重要贡献，在德国以至整个欧洲都具有相当大的影响。

四、海克尔与《自然界的艺术形态》
《自然界的艺术形态》最初出版于1899年，海克尔从自己绘制的众多生物绘画中挑选了100幅具有代表性的作品，分为10个分册出版，每个分册10幅图。1904年，海克尔将10个分册合在一起出版了一个合集，这就是我们今天在本书中看到的内容。这本书的出版，在当时的西方科学界和艺术界都产生了巨大的影响。
