嫩枝掌緊張地瞥了高聳的松樹林一眼。冷風在枝葉間呼嘯，松樹不停搖晃。她想念雷族的領地，那裡的樹木似乎比較堅固，古老的樹根盤根錯結地深紮在土裡。但是在松樹林裡，總覺得樹隨時可能倒下來。
「嫩枝掌！別再盯著樹看了，快點來幫忙。」鰭掌喊道。棕黃相間的見習生對她眨眨眼睛。
葉星派嫩枝掌和鰭掌、露掌出來找些小嫩枝回去蓋營地。蘆葦掌則留下來整理他們昨天收集回來的青苔，剔掉裡頭的芒刺。鰭掌已經收集了一堆棍子，他的弟弟在比較遠的地方，正在一叢荊棘底下搜找。
嫩枝掌朝他們快步走去，但仍伸長脖子看著正晃動不停的樹頂。「你們不會擔心可能有樹隨時倒下來嗎？」
露掌從荊棘底下鑽出來，棕色虎斑毛髮凌亂不堪。「怎麼會倒下來？它們在這裡的時間已經跟星族一樣古老了吧。」
「可是風那麼大。」嫩枝掌必須抬高音量，才能蓋過樹枝的颼颼拍打聲。這時突然有根小樹枝掉到她背上，她嚇得尖叫一聲。
鰭掌覺得好笑，鬍鬚微微抽動。「我還以為妳很習慣住在森林裡。」
「雷族的森林跟這裡不一樣。」嫩枝掌蓬起毛髮，掩飾尷尬。「那裡起風的時候，你根本感覺不到，因為樹木會幫我們擋風。它們不像蘆葦一樣搖來晃去。」
「影族似乎在松樹林裡住得很習慣。」鰭掌提醒她。
「至少一起風，就有很多小樹枝可以撿。」露掌補充道。
嫩枝掌掃視森林。視線所及，到處都有正在掉落的小樹枝。林地裡散落著細長的樹枝，很適合拿來編織窩穴的牆。她抓起其中一根，再轉身去撿從她身上彈落的那一根。她其實滿肚子火，但只能盡量不去想背後的原因。為什麼要派她來幹見習生的活兒呢？她已經通過評鑑了。要是她還在雷族，早就得到戰士封號了。那麼現在的她就會在營地裡建窩穴，而不是出來收集材料。
她甩開這念頭。是妳選擇加入天族的，她提醒自己，妳想跟紫羅蘭掌和鷹翅一起生活。可是她總覺得這些新的族貓有點怪。天族貓個性是很好啦。但她畢竟已經習慣了雷族營地的紀律與常規。葉星感覺上不太像族長，而是比較像一般戰士。因為她會跟族貓們一起工作、狩獵和巡邏，完全沒有差別待遇。鷹翅雖然是副族長，但狩獵隊伍都是由貓兒們自行組成。他偶而會建議該去巡邏邊界，但都由他們自願前往，而不是透過命令。
她心想，應該是因為他們剛剛才找到一個新家園吧。
但是這並無法解釋天族對寵物貓的信任。嫩枝掌得知天族以前常有寵物貓前來，便覺得很不可思議。聽說他們總是來來去去，既住在他們的部族，也住在兩腳獸那裡。天族稱這些貓兒為「日光戰士」。嫩枝掌不懂戰士這種工作怎麼可能兼差呢。要嘛你是戰士，要嘛你不是。至少麥葛文最後決定留在天族，所以他幾乎算是真正的戰士。不過他也像雷族的蜜妮一樣仍保留寵物貓的名字。
而且天族貓好少哦。嫩枝掌皺起眉頭。這裡的見習生幾乎跟戰士一樣多。奇怪的是，一個長老也沒有。嫩枝掌想到灰紋和蜜妮，不免感傷。因為他們就像雷族裡堅固的樹根一樣穩穩地盤住整個部族，總是能說出一些令族貓們寬心的話，再不然就是用語帶調侃的抱怨來化解一切。
她以為只要跟紫羅蘭掌和鷹翅生活在一起，就不會再有鄉愁。可是她跟他們相處得越久，便越發現他們兩個其實好像，想法幾乎一模一樣，有時候跟他們說話，就像跟同一隻貓說話似的。這總讓她覺得自己像個局外者。我還以為我才是那個跟鷹翅最投緣的孩子，畢竟是我救了天族，這念頭令她有點羞愧，但還是忍不住會想。鷹翅是也很疼我，她告訴自己，只是跟疼紫羅蘭掌的方式不一樣。
她發現鰭掌正瞪著她看。「雷族貓都喜歡做白日夢嗎？」他喵聲道。
她對他眨眨眼睛，很不好意思自己又發呆了起來。「對不起，」她伸爪去搆另一枝樹枝，把它拖進她那一堆小樹枝裡頭。針狀的松葉不時卡進她的腳爪裡。「我還在適應新家。你不覺得這裡很怪嗎？」
「什麼都很怪啊，這種感覺其實已經很久了，所以現在差不多習慣了。」鰭掌告訴她。
「你想念峽谷嗎？」她問道。
鰭掌聳聳肩。「我沒住過那裡。」
露掌走了過來，嘴裡叼了一捆樹枝，丟在鰭掌旁邊。「我們是在他們離開峽谷後才在另一座湖邊出生的。」他解釋道。「天族在那裡度過了一整個季節。」　　
嫩枝掌豎起耳朵。「所以你們從沒見過峽谷？」
「從沒見過。」鰭掌告訴她，黃色眼睛帶了些遺憾。
「你希望你見過嗎？」她好奇問道。
鰭掌別過臉去。「別的貓兒常談到那地方，」他喵聲道：「我當然也希望自己見過他們說的那座峽谷。」
嫩枝掌的心微微刺痛，她懂他的感受。「我也是。」她還以為天族貓在緬懷以前的日子時，只有她覺得自己被排擠在外。
鰭掌眼神溫暖地朝她眨眨眼睛。「下一次他們談到以前的日子時，我們也可以緬懷一下我們一起撿樹枝的日子啊。」他扮個鬼臉，然後對著她那一小堆樹枝點頭示意。「我們再多收集一點，就可以回營地了。」
露掌掃視林地，看見有塊地方散落了好多木條，忍不住甩打起尾巴。「我去把它們撿過來。」
嫩枝掌快步跟在他後面。她想彌補自己剛剛樹枝收集得不夠多的事實。她鑽進灌木底下，肚皮貼在地上扭動。灌木中間的莖梗勾住了其中幾根樹枝，她伸爪過去，拉了出來。等她從灌木底下鑽出來時，有樣東西從她身邊滑過去。「有蛇！」她尖叫大叫，往後一彈，毛髮豎得筆直。
鰭掌大聲喵嗚。「那不是蛇啦，」他用腳爪拾起一根歪扭的樹枝，對嫰枝掌眨眨眼睛。「你太神經質了！」
嫩枝掌甩甩毛髮，盡量不讓他看見她的腳爪在發抖。「這裡的風大到我有點神經緊張。」她不好意思地說道。
風仍在林間肆虐，而且呼嘯聲愈來愈大。林地裡迴盪著樹幹的嘎吱作響聲。
「我們把這些樹枝帶回營地吧。」鰭掌提議道。他朝露掌喊道：「我們回去了。」
「我來了！」露掌用嘴叼起一捆樹枝，朝他們走來。
就在他快走近的時候，突然強風大作，猛刮周遭林子。某種斷裂聲劃破空氣。嫩枝掌心上一驚，抬頭一看，只見一根粗壯的樹枝直墜而下，鰭掌首當其衝。
「小心！」她飛快伸爪勾住鰭掌的頸背，一把拉了過來。樹枝撞上地面，砰地發出巨響，針葉飛噴在她臉上。塵土飛揚、樹皮四濺。
「鰭掌！」
見習生躺在她旁邊，驚恐地瞪大眼睛。
「鰭掌！」嫩枝掌甩掉身上的針葉，低頭看他。
「他的尾巴！」露掌跑了過來，全身毛髮豎得筆直。
嫩枝掌循著灰色公貓的目光，後者正瞪著鰭掌的尾巴看。它被壓在樹枝底下。
「我們得移開它！」嫩枝掌跳起來頂住樹枝，試圖滾動。但太重了，根本紋風不動。
「樹枝太粗了。」露掌繞著樹枝看了一下。它比貓兒的肚子還寬，長度猶如一整棵樹幹。
「鰭掌！」嫩枝掌朝他頭顱的方向轉身，直視他的眼睛，只見他痛得瞪大著兩隻晶亮的眼睛。「你可以說話嗎？」
「可以。」鰭掌上氣不接下氣。
「我們得找幫手。」嫩枝掌的思緒紊亂。天族沒有巫醫貓，她需要赤楊心。可是雷族營地太遠，鰭掌需要幫手，現在就要。她看著露掌。「你快跑回營地去找貓兒來幫忙，越多貓兒越好，才有辦法移開這根樹枝。我去影族營地找水塘光來。」
露掌瞪著她，害怕地貼平耳朵。「我們不能單獨留下鰭掌，萬一他……」
嫩枝掌打斷他。「這裡離營地不遠，你很快就可以回來。鰭掌不會有事的。」她看了鰭掌一眼。「你不會有事的，」她承諾道。「我們馬上回來。你只要撐住就行了。」她搜尋著他那雙驚嚇過度的眼睛。
「你們要快一點。」他沙啞說道。
嫩枝掌朝露掌轉身。「你跑快點！」灰色見習生早已鑽進林子，衝了回去。
她也趕緊朝影族邊界急奔，林地在她腳下飛掠，布滿林地的針葉富含彈力，不斷將她往前推，她越跑越快，終於抵達氣味記號線。她氣喘吁吁，但還是馬不停蹄地往前跑。拜託不要讓我跑錯方向。她以前來過影族營地找過紫羅蘭掌。不過當時是夜裡。但她知道她得朝大湖的反方向跑。太陽高掛頭頂，風在後方呼嘯。她突然認出一棵腐朽的樹墩，影族的氣味頓時變得強烈。她繼續前奔，腳爪像著了火，雙眼掃視前方林子。樹幹之間若隱若現的是不是就是荊棘叢？她衝了過去，終於認出影族營地的圍籬，這才如釋重負，繞了一圈，鑽進入口。
她在空地上剎住腳步，眼前是滿臉驚詫的影族貓兒們。
「妳來這裡做什麼？」焦毛怒瞪著她。
刺柏爪驚訝地眨著眼睛。「妳好大膽……」
「嫩枝掌？」水塘光從窩裡探出頭來。「出了什麼事？微雲要生了嗎？」
嫩枝掌搖搖頭，上氣不接下氣。她深吸一口氣，脫口而出：「是鰭掌！」
水塘光趕緊從窩裡出來。
