“便当”一词源于中国，日文汉字写作“弁当”［bento］。料理研究者奥村彪生在《日本的便当》一书中写道：含便利之意的“便当”在日本室町时代传入日本，到了安土桃山时代已明确指“存放食物的便携式多层方木盒”。
如今，便当已经遍布日本。大家来日本旅行，首先会见到车站小卖部的“铁路便当”。烹调方式以烤、煮或凉拌为主，使用调料最多的是酱油和味噌。这些调料含有的氨基酸，让食材冷却后也能保持美味。尤其是多用干香菇和蔬菜的日式煮物，冷却后更入味。由于使用了当地土产和优质稻米，并用传统方式烹饪，再搭配上本地风格的餐盒包装，别具风味。
日本年轻妈妈们最喜欢的是卡通便当。小饭团上用海苔、奶酪等“画出”眼睛鼻子，再用鸡蛋、肉末和五彩的蔬果来构成方寸之间的小世界。早上的母亲们真辛苦啊。卡通便当的出发点只是为了让孩子中午在幼儿园多吃一点，但这一技术被主妇们钻研得越来越深，加上现在的便当工具和食材都变得非常丰富，所以诞生了闻名世界的日式卡通便当。
最朴实的，也是本书着重介绍的，是普通的家庭便当。春天全家人去看樱花，便当盒里一定会装满母亲的拿手菜。平时给儿子的“通学便当”要多多考虑营养均衡，但学校远足或运动会时可以放松一下，多加点孩子们喜欢的菜肴。给上班的先生准备的“通勤便当”得少油少盐，还得美味、分量足。在每个人的时间安排、工作节奏、家计、口味都不同的环境下做出的每个便当，体现出不同的个性和生活，甚至人生。
如今在北京，我每天早上会做两份便当，一个给先生，一个给自己。到了中午听着自己喜欢的歌，倒茶，打开便当盒，就仿佛回到了学生时代。看到我的“早弁”［hayaben］而批评我的班主任，午休时拼桌一起打开便当盒的同学们……虽然和同学们都失去了联系，但能想象得出他们一定和我一样，在为别人或自己做着便当。
过去觉得在北京做日式便当不太方便，但经过多次试验，我慢慢开始用当地普通食材做出便当。本书介绍的便当特点如下：
1. 用本地购买的材料，大部分食材可以在普通超市和菜场买到。
2. 一人份便当的成本控制在十元以下。
3. 不需要高明的刀工和烹调技艺，厨艺一年级即可实践。

本书按季节共介绍了四十个便当和关于它的回忆，同时以日本家庭主妇的角度来介绍日式家常料理的制作法。可以把本书当个随笔集看，也可以从菜谱步骤知道日本媳妇在北京是如何下功夫做出一些日本菜的。
