18岁的时候，肖恩•白塞尔第yi次在苏格兰小镇威格敦看到那家名叫“书店”（The Book Shop）的书店。他和朋友散步路过，看到堆满书籍的橱窗，对朋友说：“这家店到年底一定倒闭。”

十三年后，2001年，肖恩买下了这家书店。

起初，肖恩对于如何经营书店一无所知。经过十多年的辛勤工作，如今的“书店”已成为苏格兰蕞大的旧书书书店。肖恩与朋友们每年秋天在当地组织图书节，而这座小镇也成为远近闻名的“书城”。

书店老板多半缺乏耐心、偏执、厌恶交际。特例当然有，许多书商并不是那样的。但很不幸，我是。不过，并非一直如此。记得在买下这家书店前，我还挺温顺友善的。连珠炮似的无聊问题，朝不保夕的资金状况，与店员和一个接一个没完没了讨价还价的顾客漫无休止的争论，害我成了这副模样。至于我想不想改变现状？一点也不想。

总价是38镑；她让我打折，我说这些书可以35镑给她，她回答道：“30镑不行吗？”书的价格明明已经是原定价的零头，还带折扣，顾客却还是觉得理应再砍掉百分之三十，这真是在严重考验我对人类尊严的信心。

乌黑却日渐稀少的头发费心梳理过，好让它们盖住头顶——有些秃顶男就是以这种毫无说服力的方法试图让别人相信他们依然发量丰裕。他的衣服剪裁考究，所以穿在身上也算整齐，不过他着装还是有问题：在衬衣下摆啊纽扣啊拉链啊这类细节上，他有点漫不经心。仿佛有人把他的衣服装进大炮里一下子朝他轰过去似的

我对他一无所知，连他的名字也不知道。说实话，我一直不懂他为什么要找我订书，明明很容易就能从亚马逊上买啊。也许他没有电脑。也许他根本不想要电脑。也许他属于快要死绝了的那一类人，知道要让书店活下去就得大力支持。

妮基是9点13分到的，穿了一件她在威廉港的义卖商店里买的加拿大滑雪服。这是她在十一月到四月间的标准制服。那是种填了衬垫的连衣裤，专为滑雪而设计，她穿在身上就像个走丢了的天线宝宝。

“进化”是妮基最喜欢的话题，不过把《物种起源》放到“小说”区域这种事情，她也是常常干的。我则还以颜色，把一本本《圣经》（她认为是历史类）跟长篇小说放在一起。

要卖航空书籍的女人是上个礼拜打电话来的，听起来颇为紧急。书是她一年前过世的丈夫的。她卖了房子，三月要搬走。……人们通常希望能一次性处理掉所有藏品，如果拥有者已经故去就更是如此。安娜和我把十四箱书搬上车，回家了。一望便知，这批书凝聚了丈夫一生的热情，如今终于跟它们告别，她松了一口气，尽管对航空题材毫无兴趣，她显然知道跟它们分别将会很难。
