潜意识是个未知的、广阔的新领域，要对它进行探索，不仅需要借助其他科学分支，还需要以另外一些对人的起源进行研究的方法为依据。在我们尝试着研究儿童心灵对环境的种种反应，并希望借此来解释儿童心灵的发展时，却意外发现了当儿童心灵陷入黑暗、被扭曲后的种种内在矛盾与悲惨境遇，而这些更能进一步帮助我们从本质上认识“人”这种生物。

精神分析学最引人注目的发现之一就是，人还是婴儿时，精神疾病的种子或许就已经被种下。当已经被遗忘的一部分事情被从潜意识中唤醒，我们清晰地认识到，一些不为我们所知的痛苦正残害着我们的孩子。这是一个与我们以前的想法截然不同的、令人印象深刻且为之心绪难平的发现。儿童单纯的心灵正在慢慢被腐蚀，这种伤害不是一蹴而就的，它持续而缓慢。它是成年人罹患精神疾病的重要诱因，我们对此却一无所知。儿童的心灵是纯净的，之所以会受伤，原因就在于一些儿童自发的活动受到了对他拥有绝对支配权且影响最深的成年人——母亲的压抑。

我们应该从两个不同的层次着手对心理分析进行探究。一是浅层的探究，即对人的自然本能与他必须要去适应的环境之间的矛盾进行探究。因为要将一部分潜在的、会导致人不安的因素提升到意识的高度是很容易的事情。另一个是深层的探究，即对童年记忆的探究。这一层次存在的矛盾并非成年人与其所处的社会环境的矛盾，而是成年人与孩子之间的矛盾，或者更确切地说，是孩子与母亲之间的矛盾。

迄今为止，在心理分析领域，与这类矛盾相关的分析案例还非常少，正因为如此，解决矛盾就成了一件非常困难的事情。而且，在解决矛盾方面，人们至今为止也没做出什么努力，所以，这些矛盾到现在还被误认为是患病的征兆。

无论是心理疾病还是生理疾病，在治疗过程中，都不可避免地要考虑童年经历所造成的影响，现在这一点已经成了人们的共识。心理分析是不错的方法，除此之外，其他一些方法也很有必要被采用。所有能追溯至童年的疾病，基本上都是重症或难以治疗的。原因就在于，在还是个孩童的时候，成人的个性特征便已经被确定。

尽管针对不同的身体疾病，医学领域细分出了各种专科，如胎儿卫生、婴儿护理，等等，而且，儿童的身体健康也逐渐成为社会关注的焦点，然而，在心理学领域却并未出现类似的发展。虽然现在人们已经认识到，成年人之所以难以适应社会环境、之所以存在严重的心理障碍，根本原因还是童年的一些经历，可是却没有人尝试着去解决童年时代就存在的那些矛盾。

为什么不去尝试？大概是因为心理分析从本质上说其实是对人的潜意识进行探究的一种方法。尽管这种方法在治疗成年人疾病方面成就斐然，但事实证明，它不适用于儿童，甚至还会遭遇阻碍。换言之，利用这种方法，并不能让一个还处在童年时期的孩子去回忆童年发生的事情。因此，和儿童相处的时候，观察无疑是比探究更好的方式。不过，因为观察的目的是发现儿童与成年人、儿童与所处社会环境之间的矛盾，所以，这种观察必须要从心理角度切入。无论是从理论上还是从实践方法上，观察的方式与心理分析都是背道而驰的，这是一个全新的领域，这一点显而易见。

这种观察最主要的目的是了解现实生活对儿童心理的影响，而非探究心理方面的不健全。事实上，现实生活几乎涵盖了整个人生。人类还无法谱写出一部完整的心理探究史，换言之，还没有人对儿童的心理障碍做过阐述，也没有人对儿童与不理解他却比他强大且对他具有支配权的成年人之间的矛盾做过阐述；也没有人对儿童心灵所受的不为人知的创伤及他脆弱的心理遭受的侵扰做过阐述；更没有人对儿童无力实现的自然界期望他实现的目标和自卑情绪在潜意识中的发展历程做过阐述。

这个隶属心理分析领域的问题，虽然已被提出，但尚未被解决，因为疾病与疾病治疗才是心理分析的主要关注领域，因此，在儿童心理疾病的预防方面，它能起到的作用实在是微乎其微。但研究儿童心理却能为心理分析学提供有效的帮助，因为通常来说，这种研究对心理障碍的消除及预防可能导致精神疾病的矛盾的产生都极为有利，而这些，恰恰是心理分析最关注的。

由此，一个全新的、以科学的方法对儿童进行研究的学科正式成型。它和心理分析非常相似，却又有所区别。它关注的焦点不是病人，而是常人，它专注于儿童教育及心理层面的儿童成长。因此，它的主要目的是督促人们对迄今为止尚不为人知的儿童心理进行了解，唤醒成年人对儿童的关怀意识，让他们清楚地意识到他们之所以会以错误的态度对待孩子，是因为受到了自身潜意识的影响。
