《认知心理学：心智与脑》：
2.1 心智与脑
区分计算机软件（即程序）与计算机硬件是一个好的开端，因为这让我们能够关注计算机的运行，而不仅仅是它的物理属性。但是，认为心理活动就像计算机软件，脑就像计算机硬件的看法并不完全正确。如果一个计算机程序很有用，有时我们会把它做成芯片，使其成为硬件的一部分。一旦转换成芯片，曾经是程序的东西（即对计算机的指令）就变成了刻在芯片上的电子通路，程序本身就不存在了，你就无法将芯片的各部分与计算机程序中的不同指令对应起来。比如，我们在一个程序中写了一条指令，让计算机把10个数字相加，然后又写了一条指令，让计算机把加起来的和除以10求平均数。在芯片中，这样的指令是不存在的，取而代之的是一些能够实现相同功能的电子回路。即便这样，可以说芯片做着与程序相同的事情：数字求和，然后将和除以数字的个数求平均数。重要的一点是：尽管实际上软件（程序）并不存在，我们还是可以用描述程序的语言来描述硬件的功能。
关键的区别不在于软件和硬件本身，而在于分析水平（level of analysis）的不同，也就是我们在描述某一事物时抽象程度的不同。不同的分析水平通常使用不同的术语。以计算机为例，在物理构成的水平上，我们可以通过电流如何影响磁场，机器如何产热和散热等问题来描述计算机。在功能水平上，我们可以通过计算机正在做什么的问题来描述计算机，例如计算机接收符号形式的输入、把信号转化为特殊编码、存储该信息、对该信息进行加工（相加、排序、对比输入信息与已存储信息，等等）。在这一水平上，我们不再依赖于物理术语，而是使用信息加工（information processing）的术语来进行精确的描述，这些术语包括存储、加工和信息转化。在认知心理学中，信息加工的术语经常被用来描述心理活动。在面试的过程中，当你坐在那儿，微笑着试图让自己看上去很放松的时候，你的头脑却在努力地工作，让自己能做出最有效的反应。为了理解你的每一个反应和问题之中究竟包含了哪些心理活动，我们需要理解信息加工。
分析水平差异观点的一个核心方面是：对一个水平的描述不能取代对另一个水平的描述；各个水平可能提供同等有效的分析，甚至能够相互补充，但各个水平之间不能互换。尤其是对心理活动的分析上，信息加工的水平不能用对脑的物理构成水平上的描述来取代。为什么不能？举个类似的例子，你能用对砖瓦水泥等建筑材料的描述来取代对该建筑的建筑风格的描述吗？不能。你能用对构成刀片的铁原子的描述来替代对剪刀功能的描述吗？显然不能。再举人手为例，你能用对构成手的骨骼、肌腱、肌肉的描述来取代对手的抓握、按抚、戳刺功能的描述吗？不能。计算机与人脑也是同样的道理。为了获得全面的理解，我们必须区分功能水平的分析（一栋建筑在建筑风格上的特点、一把剪子和一只手的功用）和物理水平的分析（构成这些物体的各个成分的物理属性有哪些）。
