Book Abstract

寅恪少时家居江宁头条巷。是时海内尚称乂安，而识者知其将变，寅恪虽年在童幼，然亦有所感触，因欲纵观所未见之书，以释幽忧之思。伯舅山阴俞觚斋先生明震同寓头条巷，两家衡宇相望，往来便近。俞先生藏书不富，而颇有精本，如四十年前有正书局石印戚蓼生钞八十回《石头记》，其原本即先生官翰林日，以三十金得之于京师海王村书肆者也。一日寅恪偶在外家检读藏书，获睹钱遵王曾所注《牧斋诗集》，大好之，遂匆匆读诵一过，然实未能详绎也。是后钱氏遗著尽出，虽几悉读之，然游学四方，其研治范围与中国文学无甚关系，故虽曾读之，亦未深有所赏会也。丁丑岁，芦沟桥变起，随校南迁昆明，大病几死。稍愈之后，披览报纸广告，见有鬻旧书者。驱车往观，鬻书主人出所藏书，实皆劣陋之本，无一可购者。当时主人接待殷勤，殊难酬其意，乃询之曰:此诸书外，尚有他物欲售否?主人踌躇良久，应曰:曩岁旅居常熟白茆港钱氏旧园，拾得园中红豆树所结子一粒，常以自随。今尚在囊中，愿以此豆奉赠。寅恪闻之大喜，遂付重值，借塞其望。自得此豆后，至今岁忽忽二十年，虽藏置箧笥，亦若存若亡，不复省视。然自此遂重读钱集，不仅借以温旧梦、寄遐思，亦欲自验所学之深浅也。盖牧斋博通文史，旁涉梵夹道藏，寅恪平生才识学问固远不逮昔贤，而研治领域，则有约略近之处。岂意匪独牧翁之高文雅什多不得其解，即河东君之清词丽句，亦有瞠目结舌、不知所云者，始知禀鲁钝之资，挟鄙陋之学，而欲尚论女侠名姝文宗国士于三百年之前(可参云间杜九高《登春尺五楼诗集卷二·下·武静先生席上赠钱牧斋宗伯》，诗云

“帐内如花真侠客”及顾云美苓《河东君传》云“宗伯大喜，谓天下风流佳丽，独王修微杨宛如与君鼎足而三。何可使许霞城茅止生专国士名姝之目”)，诚太不自量矣。虽然，披寻钱柳之篇什于残缺毁禁之余，往往窥见其孤怀遗恨，有可以令人感泣不能自已者焉。夫三户亡秦之志，九章哀郢之辞，即发自当日之士大夫，犹应珍惜引申，以表彰我民族独立之精神，自由之思想。何况出于婉娈倚门之少女，绸缪鼓瑟之小妇，而又为当时迂腐者所深诋，后世轻薄者所厚诬之人哉!牧斋事迹具载明清两朝国史及私家著述，固有缺误，然尚多可考。至于河东君本末，则不仅散在明清间人著述，以列入乾隆朝违碍书目中之故，多已亡佚不可得见。
