中晚唐政治史研究在过去十多年经历了突飞猛进的发展，已成为中古史研究中*令人瞩目的焦点之一。这其中，包括大量中晚唐墓志在内的新出石刻资料的刊布与整理，无疑是推动其发展的重要外因。而新世纪以降，中古学界对“唐宋变革”这一命题的重新关注，以及学界自身逐渐意识到的亟待改变的重前轻后的唐史研究时段的不平衡，也很大程度地激发了学者对中晚唐的重新认识和深入考察。本书以其别开生面的研究方法和高屋建瓴的研究格局，直接推动了学界对这一领域的重视，学术价值极高。布罗代尔认为，“在谈到各个帝国和它们的兴衰的时侯，也许应该注意到促使这些国家诞生的命运，也就是说，不要混淆时期，不要过早去察觉那些与日俱增后来变得强大的事物的巨大威势，也不要过早去预示那些随着岁月流逝后来不再强大的事物的衰落”，中晚唐在中国历史上的特殊之处便在于这是长达两个半世纪缓慢的“衰落”，甚至可以略带夸张地说将这一过程描述为“衰落”是后世史家提供的刻板印象。本书的讨论虽仍集矢于唐廷与藩镇这一旧议题，但观察的角度力求与前人有所不同，尝试从政治的动态演变与藩镇内部的变迁入手，考索中晚唐政治运作中的惯例与默契。作者熟练运用新出石刻资料，并与传世文献融会贯通，在个案研究的基础上，勾勒与以往稍具不同的历史演进线索，推陈出新，别开生面。

仇鹿鸣，复旦大学历史系副教授。著有《魏晋之际的政治权力与家族网络》，曾先后在《历史研究》、《中国史研究》、《文史》、《中华文史论丛》、《国学研究》、《唐研究》等学术刊物上发表论文三十余篇，研究兴趣主要集中于中古中国的国家与社会、士族政治、石刻文献等领域。

Book Abstract

将长城、故宫视为传统中国的标志性景观这一现代人普遍接受的观念无疑是近代以来民族国家建构过程中的发明。正如本章开头的引语所提示的那样,当梁思成夫妇20世纪30年代在华北调查古迹的时候,当地人对于什么是古建筑懵懂无知,在他们心中只有石碑才是唯一不朽的象征。这种对于建筑的忽视或许与中国传统木构建筑不易保存的特性有关,但我们已足以窥知石碑这一景观在古人的世界中占据了何等重要的地位。
正缘于此,古人可以非常熟练地借助这些石质的景观来传递政治变化的讯号:
蔡州既平,宪宗命道士张某至境,置醮于紫极宫。宫本吴少诚生祠也,裴令公毁之为宫,有道士院,阶前种麻,生高如墉,道士葺为藩屏。其醮日霹雳击麻屏两片,下有穴五寸已来,有狸迹。寻之,上屋,其踪稍大,如马,亦如人足,直至屋上而灭。其韩碑石本吴少诚德政碑,世与狄梁公碑对立,其吴碑亦流汗成泥,狄梁公碑如故。不十日,中使至,磨韩之作而刊改制焉。
平定淮西是宪宗一生所经历的最为艰难的战斗,此役的胜利奠定了元和中兴的基础。而淮西重归王化的重要标志便是蔡州城市景观的改变,作为吴少诚家族统治淮西合法性的两个重要的象征,吴少诚生祠被改建为紫极宫。李唐以老子为祖先,天宝二年(743)“改西京玄元庙为太清宫,东京为太微宫,天下诸郡为紫极宫”。太微宫、紫极宫中供奉唐朝历代皇帝的御容,具有重要的政治象征意义:
(会昌六年正月)东都太微宫修成玄元皇帝、玄宗、肃宗三圣容,遣右散骑常侍裴章往东都荐献。
(大历七年五月)辛卯,徙忻州之七圣容于太原府之紫极宫。
东海远皇都三千余里,承平不轨之后,人多不知法制。州无律令、无紫极宫。公下车则命备写而创置之,揭以碑铭,连境知教。
众所周知,安史乱中,河北叛乱诸郡皆把各地开元寺中玄宗真容铜像毁,只有恒州仍存,乱平后唐廷特加李宝臣实封百户以褒之,可知真容铜像的存废同样具有象征意味。而如海州那样未立紫极宫的偏远州郡只是个例,吕让莅政后兴造紫极宫也因之成为教化民风的标志。因此紫极宫作为唐代官方道观,平定淮西之后得到重建,象征意义不言而喻。同时,吴少诚德政碑则被磨灭,改刻为韩愈撰文的《平淮西碑》。唐廷之所以特别选择用吴少诚德政碑的旧石来摹勒新碑,正是要借助对于碑铭这一永久性景观的重新定义,向已有30年未沾王化的淮西军民宣示这场战争的正义性,进而重建朝廷在淮西的政治权威。
我们更为熟悉的则是初唐名臣魏征的例子。魏征去世之后,太宗为其亲自撰书神道碑,并许其子魏叔玉尚衡山公主,哀荣备至。碑刻石完毕之后,“停于将作北门,公卿士庶竞以模写,车马填噎,日有数千”。即通过拓本的形式,使不能移动的石碑化身万千,将魏征良臣的形象广为传布,亦成功塑造了贞观之治、君臣相得的政治形象。但不久太宗便对魏征心生嫌隙,遂停婚仆碑,魏家恩宠转衰。后太宗远征辽东无功而返,念及魏征旧日谏诤之劳,以少牢祠其墓,复立碑。魏征神道碑的立与仆,与吴少诚德政碑的磨灭与重刻一样,都无声地向观看者传递着政治变化的讯号。在古人的生活世界中,石碑作为一种重要而常见的景观,象征着秩序与权力,是一般民众观察政治变化的重要窗口,这构成了古人知识系统的一部分。于是,景观更易成为政治秩序变动的象征,古人重视碑铭,无疑看重其不朽的纪念性,而一旦权力更迭,这些不朽的象征,往往首先会被重塑或废弃。欺孤儿寡母而得天下的隋文帝对此倒是有着异常清醒的认识:
(秦王)俊所为侈丽之物,悉命焚之。敕送终之具,务从俭约,以为后法也。王府僚佐请立碑,上曰:“欲求名,一卷史书足矣,何用碑为?若子孙不能保家,徒与人作镇石耳。”
石刻作为古人生活世界中常见的政治景观,虽不如武后时明堂、天枢这类特殊的建筑那么夺人眼目,但正是因为其具有普遍性与日常性,成为中国古代政治文化中一种结构性的存在。或许可以说纪念性石刻的建造、传播、改刻、移动、存废本身就构成了一部道尽古今兴亡事“无声”的历史。
