初见约翰·豪之前，我早已是他的画迷。

早在1995年，弗兰·沃尔什和我首次考虑将《魔戒》改编成电影的时候，是《1991年托尔金年历》上有一组约翰·豪的画带给我们很多启发。“山姆与希洛布”“伊奥温与那兹古尔”和“渡口”，每张看起来都好似电影剧照。他的许多画作都具有这种特质——将强烈的戏剧冲突凝结于一瞬。它们也富有真实性——一种让奇幻看来像史实的感觉。这些画作使我们对于影片可能呈现的视觉效果感到兴奋不已。

我发现约翰没有出版过任何作品合集，因此我们开展了一场“约翰·豪狩猎”，试图找出他创作的每一张图画。这很困难，因为它们散布在各种图书封面和日历上。我们挖掘了互联网、二手书店和托尔金读者社团，以找出约翰所有的作品，有时甚至会为一张新图买下整本书。后来，我们将约翰的作品用在项目展示里，试图让好莱坞对托尔金电影这个主意感兴趣——最终计划成功，我们获得了资金。约翰此时已经在《魔戒》银幕化一事中扮演了重要的角色，尽管他毫不知情。

这项工作乐趣无穷。我一直都很喜爱约翰的那幅袋底洞门厅，觉得它完美捕捉到霍比特洞府的神韵。然而，令人沮丧的是——多年来我只能眼巴巴盯着它来想象袋底洞其他部分的模样。现在我终于能让他为我画出来了！此外，我意识到约翰从未画过米那斯魔古尔，所以就请他创作了一版巫王的巢穴——结果相当出色，直接用到了电影中。
