1996年，克麗斯汀．吉伯特（Kristen Gilbert），一位三十三歲的離婚媽媽，有兩個分別為七歲和十歲的兒子。她是麻州北漢普頓退伍軍人事務醫療中心C病房的護士，在醫院同事間有良好的聲譽。有很多次，她是第一個注意到病人心跳停止、按下緊急鈕呼叫急救小組的護士。她總是很冷靜，管理病人盡職又有效率。有時候她在急救小組到達之前，就會先給病人注射刺激心臟的腎上腺素，試圖讓心臟重新跳動。這種方法偶爾能救回病人的生命，其他護士幫她取了個綽號：死亡天使。

但在同一年，有三名護士向醫院當局表達她們日漸滋生的疑問，有些事情不太對勁。她們覺得在那個特別的病房，有太多病人因為心臟停止跳動而死亡。同時，腎上腺素也好幾次出現原因不明的短缺。她們開始擔心，是不是吉伯特一開始就給病人大量的腎上腺素，導致他們心臟病發。如此一來，她便能扮演拯救他們的英雄角色，「死亡天使」這個綽號現在聽起來，比最初的意義還更為貼切。

醫院進行了調查，但沒有發現任何不尋常的事。特別的是，他們說那個病房的心臟病死亡率，和其他退伍軍人醫院大致上相同。然而醫院員工依舊心存懷疑，無法認同第一次的調查結果。後來，醫院又展開了第二次的調查，這次邀請一位專業的統計學家，即麻州大學的史蒂芬．蓋爾巴哈（Stephen Gehlbach），他仔細審查了這個病房病人心臟停止跳動和死亡的數目。基於蓋爾巴哈分析的結果，1998年聯邦檢察官辦公室決定召開大陪審團，聽取指控吉伯特的證詞。

國家的科學

統計被執法機關廣泛地使用在許多方面和各種目的上。在《數字搜查線》中，查理經常使用統計分析，本書的許多章節也出現統計方法的使用，只是沒有清楚強調出來。但什麼是統計的真正意涵呢？為什麼最後這句話中的這個字（編注：statistics）是單數呢？

Statistics這個單字源自拉丁文statisticum collegium，意思為「國家委員會」，而義大利文statista意指「政治家」，反映出這個技術最初的用途。同樣地，德文Statistik這個字的原意是指有關國家數據的分析。直到19世紀，與之同義的英文用語是「政治算術」（political arithmetic），之後statistics這個字才被引入，指的是數據的收集和分類。

今天，statistics有兩個互有關聯的意義。第一個是指數據的收集和列表；至於第二個，則是指運用數學和其他方法，從列出的數據中獲取有意義和有用的結論。有些統計學家將前者稱為「小s統計」（little-s statistics），後者則稱為「大S統計」（big-S Statistics）。當這個字用來表示數字的收集時，用小寫s開頭，當成複數名詞。但是，當它意指收集和列表數字的活動時，則是單數名詞。Statistics（用大寫S）表示一項活動，因此，它是單數名詞。

雖然有許多運動迷和其他類型的人很享受收集數據和列表整理的樂趣，但小s的statistics真正的價值，還是在於提供數據給大S的Statistics。許多大S的Statistics所使用的數學方法，都涉及被稱為機率論（probability theory）的數學分支。機率論開始於16和17世紀，當時的人們為了增加獲勝的可能性，開始嘗試了解賭博遊戲的可能結果。不過，儘管機率論被視為數學的一門分支，統計本質上卻是使用數學方法的應用科學。

儘管執法機關收集小s統計的大量數據，但我們所關注的打擊犯罪，卻是使用大S統計當成工具。（從現在起，我們要去掉「大S」、「小s」的術語，依照統計學家的用法，使用「統計」這個詞，至於是哪種含意，就請讀者依上下文的脈絡自己做判斷）

雖然執法機關中有些統計的應用會使用到複雜的方法，但大學統計學課程第一個學期的基本技巧，多半就足以滿足破案的需求。

對於美國聯邦v.吉伯特一案來說，這就是千真萬確的。在這個案件中，對陪審團而言，一個決定性的問題是當吉伯特值班時，病房的死亡人數是否顯著地增加。這裡的關鍵字是「顯著地」（significantly）。在她看護時增加一或兩位死亡人數，可能是巧合。那麼，要有多少死亡人數才算達到「顯著」的程度，足以對她起訴呢？這是一個只有統計學家才能回答的問題。因此，史蒂芬．蓋爾巴哈被要求向大陪審團提供一份他的發現之摘要。

假設檢定

蓋爾巴哈的證詞基於一種被稱為假設檢定的基本統計學方法。這個方法利用機率論，來判定一個觀察結果是否過於不尋常，以至在很大的程度上不可能自然發生。

蓋爾巴哈首先做的一件事，是畫出1988至1997年間，每一年醫院死亡人數的直條圖，依照輪班時間分成三個班次──午夜到上午8:00，上午8:00到下午4:00，下午4:00到午夜。結果如圖所示，每條直線棒表示那一年特定班次的死亡人數。
