首先我给各位考生提供几个句子自测一下。如果你能正确判断下列三个句子的正误，并且能将错误的句子改正，呵呵，恭喜你! 你的语法很不错，没有必要买下这本书。如果你不能做到这一点，我劝你不要犹豫，为了美好的明天，为了不至于在睡梦中因为后悔而痛哭，还是买下这本书仔细看看吧!
1. A person with broad and profound knowledge usually has a better life than the one who does not.
2. In my point of view dinosaurs have extincted millions of years ago because of the change of climate.
3. All of people agree that comparing with his masterpiece most of the book is poorly organized.
下面我来公布一下上述问题的答案：
第一句是错的，应改为：
A person with broad and profound knowledge usually has a better life than the one without it.
或者：
A person who has broad and profound knowledge usually has a better life than the one who does (has) not.
原因在于：汉语的“有”在英语里有"“with”和“have”两种译法，但是一个是动词，一个是介词。此外，根据英语的表达习惯，两个被比较对象及其修饰语最好用大体一致的结构，要么都用介词短语，要么都用定语从句。
第二句也是错的，应改为：
From my point of view dinosaurs died out millions of years ago because of the change of climate.
或者：
In my opinion it has been millions of years since dinosaurs died out because of the change of climate.
原因在于：from my point of view和in my opinion是固定用法，不能更改；extinct是形容词，而且现在完成时态不能和ago 连用。注意:短暂性动词也是可以用现在完成时态的，只是不能和一段时问连用。
第三句还是错的，应改为：
All (of the) people agree that compared with his masterpiece most of the book is poorly organized.
原因在于：all、most、some、many、much、few of等后面跟的名词前要用限定词（如冠词等）修饰；compare是个及物动词；而most of the book是“书的大部分内容”的意思，不需要改成most of the books。
可以看到上面例子中所有的语法规则和单词大多数都是高中时已经学过了的。怎么样，你的成绩如何?你对自己的语法功底有明确认识了吗?
托福考试在中国已经实行多年，并受到前所未有的追捧。报名热潮不断涌现，屡次出现一（考）位难求的壮观景象。其实考试的总人数比起以前虽然增加不少，但是更重要的原因在于同一考生一年中多次报考。有的考生甚至一年中参加考试多达5次。大家都知道托福考试的费用是不菲的，那么，这些考生为什么还要花这些“冤枉钱”呢?答案是明显的：他们对于考试成绩并不满意。
那么考生的成绩为什么会不理想呢?我分析主要有如下几个方面的原因：
1. 英语底子不厚实。主要表现为词汇量比较少，语法基础薄弱，大量单词发音不准。
2. 没有找到适合自己的学习方法。主要表现在没有老师指导，什么都想学，又什么都没有学好。
3. 努力程度不够。主要表现在没有恒心和毅力，没有坚定明确的学习目标。
这三个原因是按照重要性由低到高的顺序排列的。因为我一贯认为初中级阶段的语言学习不太需要创造性的工作。也就是说只要付出足够多的努力就一定能取得理想的托福成绩。有了恒心和毅力，有了坚定明确的学习目标，考生就可以记住8000以上的词汇，掌握常用的语法规则，并能正确读出每个单词。这一过程甚至都不值得用“千辛万苦”来形容。当然，如果拥有一本好的词汇书和一本好的语法书，我们就可以避免走许多弯路，这就如同有了优秀教师的指点，考生的学习效率才会有显著提高。
当然，考生不能期望通过这一本书来解决所有的问题。但是我确信本书已经能够帮助广大者生解决语法方面的问题。
在现行的托福考试中，虽然没有一道题是专门针对语法的，但是可以说每道题都考到了语法。比如，在阅读中，语法不好的考生看到长句子只能望洋兴叹，眼见得每个单词都认识，可就是不知道整句话是什么意思。在听力中这一点就更明晰了：稍微长一点的句子就让很多考生心力交瘁，苦不堪言。语法在写作和口语考试中的重要性尤为突出。因为在实际考试的阅读和听力部分，即使有读不懂或听不懂的句子，考生仍然有可能答对题，得到分数，但是写作和口语考试是输出性考试，没有选择题可以做，语法知识不好的考生只能痛哭流涕，悔不当初了。有些考生心中有千万言，可就是无法用英语表达出来，确切地说是无法用符合语法规则的英话表达出来。也有许多考生，洋洋洒洒写了四五百字或是慷慨激昂说了很多话，以为很完美地表达了自己的思想，却不料考官根本看不懂或是听不懂。以我十多年的教学经验来看，如果一个人没有超乎寻常的阅读量和听力训练，又没有认真学习过语法，那么，他就根本不可能在托福考试中获得高分。
当然，考生一定要明白学习语法的目的是运用。仅仅把几条规则背下来没有任何用处，而且还要明白是要学习语法规则，不是研究语法规则。因此，考生不应该把大量精力放在对一些术语的争论上（如：在“go to school”中到底是使用了“零冠词”还是没用冠词) ，不应该把时间浪费在对句子成分的划分上。我认为考生应该把主要精力放在以下方面：分清楚句子的主干成分和附加成分，弄明白句子中词与词的关系和位置。该书的最大特点就在于其极强的针对性和实用性。主要表现在：
第一：本书讲解的所有语法规则和现象都是在托福考试中必然会遇到和用到的。语法规则何止千万，语法现象何止万千。要把它们都详细讲解一遍，必然会占用很大篇幅，使考生花费大量时间。而时间对考生来说则是最重要的。因此本书慎重选取了对托福考生最有用的部分来讲解。书中没有讲到的语法规则对托福考试来说实用性并不强。考生可以在考完试之后去学习。
第二：本书所选用的大多数例句和托福考试的难度相当，这样便于考生把所学到的语法规则和真实考试结合起来，避免出现规则和实际运用脱节的情况。或许考生平时见到的语法书中用的例子往往是最简单的句子，一看就明白，以为语法不过如此，可是在实际使用过程中却发现不是这么回事。在编写这本书的过程中，考虑到读者群体的特殊性，我选用了大量在托福考试中出现过的句子作为例句，这样考生就能迅速适应真正的考试，切实做到学以致用。
第三：本书提供的例旬丰富，而且与托福考试的内容紧密结合。一般来说，我为每个语法规则都提供了例句。一些重要的语法规则还会有超过10个例句。这样，考生在学习的过程中就能顺便扩大词汇量和阅读量，并可以增长很多科技和文化方面的知识，如社会学、动物学、植物学、美国历史与地理、物理学和化学等，为即将到来的托福考试打下坚实的背景知识方面的基础。
我总是和学生讲，如果我们选择了出国留学申请，选择了参加托福考试，就已经和大多数人拉开了距离，站在比他们更高的起点上。我们要成为鹤，我们要飞翔，因为我们的目标是广袤的蓝天。只要认准了方向，选好了道路，就要憋足了劲，一路狂奔，路途的终点必然是辉煌的顶点。一个不准备为理想付出努力的人就是一个没有理想的人。如果一个人没有理想，我们还能对他有什么期待呢?
