Dark Chocolate Is the Ultimate Indulgence

Dark chocolate treats come in many forms, from fruity wafers to salty chips. Check out below for six different snacks that are sometimes mature, sometimes mysterious, but always definitely mouthwatering.

BOURBON Jaga Chocolate Potato Chips

If you’re looking for a different kind of chocolate snack, look no further. The Jaga Chocolate snack comes in a handy cup and is sure to satisfy your desire for a dark chocolate snack that’s a little out of the ordinary. The word “jaga” is short for the Japanese word for potato (“jaga imo”), and when you eat this snack, the potato scent comes first, followed by the dark chocolate taste. The chip is crispy yet soft, and it’s the perfect size to fit in your mouth. And you’ll feel lucky whenever you get a chip with an extra layer of chocolate coating! This snack is both sweet and salty (“ama-joppai”), and it has a taste that lingers—what we describe in Japanese as “ato wo hiku.” The chips come in a cup, and it’s totally for one person, to be finished in one sitting. And of course, the best part is titling the cup at the end so that you can tap all those chocolatey, salty crumbs straight into your mouth…

BOURBON Alfort Mini Chocolate

This “Slightly Bitter Flavor” option of the Alfort Mini Chocolate biscuits smells like Valentine’s Day in a box—not just of sweetness, but also of anticipation and mystery. The box contains a bag with a tray of 12 cute, rectangular biscuits. The dark chocolate coating (which hangs a little bit off of the biscuit on all four sides) is rich and nicely bitter, and it also has a fine roasted flavor. It’s actually the biscuit here that’s sweet, balancing out the dark chocolate. These snacks are light and not at all heavy, so be warned: it’s definitely possible to eat the whole package in one sitting…!

NESTLE Japanese Kit Kat Coffee Chocolate Wafer

These Kit Kats are meant “For Coffee Break”—as in, although they’re not coffee-flavored, they’re meant to be had during your coffee break, along with your cup of joe! The chocolate is smooth and creamy, and the biscuit has a pleasantly sandy texture. (I know, it sounds weird, but that’s what it feels like.) The chocolate is mildly sweet, perfect for folks who want a bit of a “grown up” Kit Kat without missing the best part—which, let’s face it, is the sweetness. The bag comes with 12 individually-wrapped packets, and given their small size (shorter than the length of a pinky), you may not be able to stop with just one!

YBC Noir Crunch Chocolate Mini Almond Flavor

Brought to you by YBC (short for the Yamazaki Biscuit Company), these snacks deliver a punch with their dark chocolate. When you open the bag, the content’s intense smell will only hint at its deliciousness. The outer chocolate layer is soft, while the inside biscuit is crunchy. The hints of almond stay in your mouth as a lasting taste. The snack feels kind of “high class,” with its taste, texture, and even appearance. These “mini” pieces are also dainty, with each one just over an inch long. With seven pieces in each bag and only 180 calories total (less than the calorie count of a medium plain donut!), I would rather have this bag for sure as a morning or afternoon treat.

Another flavor for the YBC Noir Crunch Chocolate Mini, these little crunchies taste sweeter than the almond version and also have a creamier, pastier texture. (The bag indicates that there’s “noir crunch” folded into the “vanilla cream,” which I totally believe.) Eating these biscuits feels like you’re eating a chocolate cream pie, just one made out of biscuits. Just imagine a biscuit pretending to be cream pie, and you have this snack. The crunch factor is almost like a chocolate rice cereal treat, but so much more. If you’re familiar with the Japanese language, you know that it’s huge on onomatopoeia—and this snack is like an onomatopoeia in a bag: zaku zaku, saku saku, crunch crunch crunch. And they’re super tasty, to boot!

GASTONE LAGO Blackcurrant Filling

When you open the plastic packet inside of the box of this Italian product, the smell of the blackcurrant (also known as cassis) hits you with full force. The flavor of the fruit filling is so intense, that as I was eating it, I felt like I was outside in nature—as if I were camping in the woods or something! The wafer is crunchy and the filling creamy—a simple concept executed to perfection. The dark chocolate coating melts on your fingers, but no matter, because you can just lick it off! Although the box comes with 12 wafers, these are quite rich and sweet, so you’ll be satisfied with just one or two. Have it with a cappuccino or a latte if you have an espresso machine at home and want to play up the Italy theme!
