Get Your Fresh Fruit (Chocolates) Here!

Long gone are the days when chocolate just comes in three flavors: milk, dark, and white. Get a load of the vast selection of fruit flavored chocolates! From raspberry and lemon to strawberry and banana, the neverending choices are sure to delight any chocolate lover.

NESTLE Japanese Kit Kat Raspberry Chocolate Wafer

Many people already know about the variety of Kit Kats available from Japan, and this raspberry flavor offers another delicious example. The outer package says “kodawari no razuberii”, which means something like “raspberry that’s been chosen with fastidiousness” (who says that about Kit Kats?!), and “otona no amasa”, which means “sweetness for adults”. The Kit Kat itself is a pretty color, and it almost smells like bubble gum—a sweetness that reminds me of an outdoor carnival. But I was fooled—this thing is tart!! But the texture is creamy, and the small packet is surprisingly satisfying. There’s almost an “extra” feel to it, as if Nestlé Japan distilled the essence of a raspberry and somehow amplified it. This Kit Kat, I daresay, is a winner.

GLICO POCKY Banana Cream Covered Chocolate Sticks

Pocky is hard not to like, and this one is no exception. When you open the bag inside the outer box, you’ll smell the strong whiff of banana—as in, the classic “candy banana” smell that you can probably imagine, though it’s one of the few times when the smell is appropriate. The thin chocolate sticks are gently sweet, and the banana cream coating is just enough to satisfy. The box contains a single bag, so you’ll want to plan on sharing it to finish the whole thing in one sitting. I counted 34 sticks in the bag though, and I daresay that is just the right amount: not too few, not too many. It’s a classic snack in a fun flavor. Who wouldn’t want to enjoy it?

MINCHER Mincher Lemon Chocolate Flakes Biscuits

I was confused by the phrase “Japanese-style brittle baking,” but no matter—these treats from the Taiwanese company Mincher are both tasty and filling. They’re made of a thin, ribbon-like dough folded into multiple layers, shaped into a biscuit that fits on the palm of your hand. Bite into it and breathe in through your nose, and your mouth will fill with its lemon flavor. And even though the chocolate goes well with the lemon, it’s really the coconut flavor that’s the winner here. Despite their size, these biscuits will fill you up—and with four small packs of three biscuits each, they are the perfect treat to share with friends over tea or milk!

CHIRIN Amaoichigo Season Chocolate

The first time I had these chocolate candies, I thought: what is this, some kind of magic candy from a Ranma ½ episode that’ll make you unable to take hot baths?! But my gosh, these are delicious. These tiny candies are small—about the size of your (literal) thumbnail. They have a milk chocolate center, covered with “amaou” strawberry chocolate, and with a sugar coating that comes in pink and red. (“Amaou” is a strawberry varietal famous in Japan.) Apparently they’re an “all season” chocolate candy because the sugar coating prevents them from melting, which means you can enjoy them… all seasons! The bag comes full of these tiny treats, so you can take them to parties and picnics to share (as suggested by the bag), or you can enjoy them by yourself when you’re drinking alone (also suggested by the bag).

BARNANA Banana Bites,Chocolate,Chewy

Barnana is a Los Angeles-based company that uses “upcycled” bananas—those that are “imperfect” and for one reason or another don’t make it to market—to make their snacks. This bag of dark chocolate banana bites smells incredible when you open it. I would have never thought to describe bananas as “juicy”, but that’s what these snacks are: the flavors burst so powerfully when you bite into them, that they feel like they’re filling your mouth. The bites have the texture of mochi, which is another delight. As if that weren’t enough, the dark chocolate coating is rich and bold, yet somehow healthy and wholesome. These snacks are hard not to buy over and over again.

MORINAGA DARS Chocolate Strawberry

Given that there’s zero chocolate smell you can detect from outside the box, the intensity of the 12 little candy pieces in the tray inside the bag (inside the box) is impressive. And it’s that magical Japanese strawberry chocolate smell—you know the one. Except with this, you can almost picture the pink scent wafting from a giant cauldron that’s boiling down and reducing massive amounts of strawberries to fit into this svelte box. The chocolate is milky and the candy as a whole is chewy. And the taste…is very sweet! which is surprising for a Japanese snack. You might want to have a drink to wash it down, though not because it’s a bad taste. I pride myself on being able to eat entire boxes of sweets in one go, but this was too intense even for me. (I really told myself I needed to stop.) It’s a good thing that the outer box has a cool lid top thingy that flips back and closes, so that you can save these treats until the next time you’re ready to enjoy them!
