《时间的囚徒》是作家邱华栋全新力作，一部近年来文坛上少有的近现代历史题材的长篇小说。从某种意义上说，是一部填补空白的作品。
首先，题材的稀缺性。该小说时空跨度大，纵深感强，分别讲述了1900年“庚子之变”、反右时期以及法国“红五月”期间的故事。巧妙的是，小说将这些故事附着在一家三代法国人菲利普的身份之上。第一代人的命运主要在几年内展开，第二代人关于中国的回忆持续了7年，而1968年巴黎的“红五月”则是一个月内发生的事情。
三段历史，三个菲利普，三种腔调，构成一个圣父、圣子、圣灵“三位一体”的结构，是音乐的复调，渗透其间，击玉敲金，各节拍间的嵌合有着惊人的精确。
其次，小说的艺术形式上有诸多创新之处。例如，小说的语调分成了多个声部。叙事的三重奏异常清晰——父亲说，女儿说，儿子说。父亲是说书人的口吻，言说第一代菲利普（爷爷）作为八国联军中的一员士兵来到中国的奇特经历；女儿以亡灵的视角，再现第二代菲利普（父亲）、一个中法混血儿右派的劳改七年；儿子站于“在场者”的角度，讲述第三代菲利普（自己）在巴黎街头掀起的风暴。小说既可以从前至后顺序阅读，也可采取跳跃的方式读取每一代人的故事。三条线索相互交织前后呼应，却不显凌乱，新奇的讲述方式使得读者充满新奇的阅读体验。
第三，作品对于中国近现代历史的折射与解读。作者的创作初衷，是通过还原历史上真实出现过的人物——在十九世纪到二十世纪这百年间来华的外国人，在那些年里，是如何以个人的命运与中国命运发生了碰撞、了解、纠缠和互相打量，来折射中西方国家近百年来错综复杂的关系。十九世纪到二十世纪，是中国作为东方大国，和西方（主要是欧洲国家）交往、碰撞密切时期。大清帝国晚期的衰落与西方国家在工业革命之后的蓬勃发展、意气风发与昂扬进取形成了鲜明的对照。由此，也展开了中华民族在二十世纪百年里的艰难求索、寻找自我发展道路的曲折奋斗。所以，作者创作这部小说，也是为了铭记历史。
第四，作品的哲学思考。优秀文学作品的价值，不止于酣畅的阅读体验，更在乎其对时代对人生对社会的思考与启迪。小说中有大量文字涉及主人公对于时间、命运、救赎以及人性的思考。通过作品，作者想传达的一个观念是：我们每个人，都受制于自己所存在的时空。时间就像牢笼，将我们固定在琥珀一样的东西里。我们无法选择，唯有承受，然后，努力地活出自己。

《时间的囚徒》是一部历史小说，全文32万字，是作家邱华栋潜心创作5年的全新长篇小说作品。
该小说结构严密，时间跨度较大，气势磅礴，显示了作家把握宏阔题材的能力。小说共分三条线索，描绘了三代法国人——他们都叫菲利普——和中国的关系。
第一代菲利普是跟随八国联军在1900年来到中国的，参加了“庚子之变”对北京使馆解围的战斗，而后留在了中国；第二代菲利普是个中法混血儿，他在1957年被打成了“右派”，一直到1964年中法建交，他被特别释放回法国；小说的第三条线索，是参加法国1968年“红五月”巴黎街头运动的第三代菲利普的活动。作品表现了爷爷、父亲和儿子，三代法国人作为历史的见证人和参与者，对于清末、民国时期的中国及当代法国社会生活的回忆、争论和参与。
