前者的“哑铃型社会”充满了斗争与仇恨，后者的“橄榄型社会”则相对稳定与和谐——体力工作者生产率的提升缔造了我们所说的发达国家。包括20世纪80年代崛起的“亚洲四小龙”，以及今日的所谓“中国经济奇迹”，本质上都是将体力工作者（农民）的生产率大幅提升（成为农民工）的结果。去年美国《时代》周刊将中国农民工这个群体形象作为封面人物，其标志意义正在于此。体力工作者的生产率大幅提升后，使得人们工作的时间也大幅缩短，这部分“多出来”的时间，转向了休闲与教育。教育时间的延长，又催生了一场更大的社会革命——知识工作者以及知识社会的来临。1959年美国的人口统计显示，靠知识（而非体力）“谋生”的人口，超过体力劳动者，成为人口的主力军。这一增长的趋势一直维持到现在，这就是我们所说的白领社会。在彼得·德鲁克开创管理学之前，全世界能吸纳最多知识工作者的国家是中国。中国自汉代以来的文官制度，在隋唐经过科举制定型后，为整个社会打通了从最底层通向上层的通道。这不但为社会注入了源源不断的活力，也马通过定位为“驾驶”，从而充分利用了奔驰在顾客心中强势（尊贵）中的弱点（移动不方便），结果从濒临破产的品牌变为风行世界的强势品牌。
百事可乐，也是利用可口可乐强势（可乐发明者更“正宗”）中的弱点（父辈在喝），界定出自己的新一代“年轻人可乐”的定位，从破产边缘走出一条光辉大道。定位与管理一样，不仅仅适用于企业组织，甚至适用于一个岛国——格林纳达，通过重新定位为“加勒比海的原貌”，引来了游客无数，从而使该国原本高达30％以上的失业率消失得无影无踪。美国民主党也在采纳了特劳特先生将共和党重新定位为“不称职”而在上次中期选举中大获全胜，又因不坚持即违背定位原则而在此次中期选举中败北（详见特劳特经典丛书之《重新定位》）。在中国，一包小小的乌江榨菜因从原来的“乌江三榨”重新定位为“正宗涪陵榨菜”，而造就了股市上“疯狂的榨菜”。王老吉将凉茶重新定位为“预防上火的饮料”，其生产率也获得爆炸性提升。反之，当一个品牌破坏了已有的定位，或者企业运营没有遵循顾客心智中的定位来配置资源，则不但新投入顾客不接受，反而将企业巨大的资产浪费甚至使企业走向毁灭。
