美国的《韦氏大学英语词典》（Merriam-Webster’sCollegiateDictionary）第11版即将在中国出版，和读者见面了。
这是一本历史悠久的词典。它的第1版是在1898年出版的。正是在这一年，在中国，先是严复先生出版了译作《天演论》，接着便发生了百日维新，寻求变革。从那时到现在，一百多年过去了。在此期间，这本词典的编辑部人员换了一茬又一茬。正是由于他们的辛勤努力，我们今天才有幸用上面前这部词典。
这是一本与时俱进的词典。随着时间的推移，新词新义不断出现。编辑部借助大量语料库收集整理资料。编辑第11版时可以利用的资料比编辑第10版时增加了120万条，新增的内容可想而知。
这是一本美国学者为美国读者编写的词典。原书编者称，虽然叫做大学词典，却不是专为大学生编写的。它是一本大学水平的词典，除了大学生以外，公司白领乃至家中写作的人都可以使用。这是一本重在释义的词典。美国读者多以英语为母语，查词典主要是求解，把词义弄清楚就够了，对他们来说，用法和例句显得不那么重要。试以名词act为例，这本词典给了10个义项，而学习型词典，有的给6个义项，有的给7个义项，可见这本词典所给的义项是非常详尽的。编者在有限的篇幅中容纳了尽量多的关于词义的信息，使人读了不能不对他们表示由衷的钦佩。
这本词典可以“引导我们到深水区去游泳”。近年来，英国和美国的出版社编辑出版了多种学习型词典（learner’sdictionary），目的是帮助非英语国家的学生学好英语。这些词典的释义和举例，用词限制在一定范围之内，语言尽量通俗，用法讲得细，例句给得多。这些词典对于中国学生学好英语起了很大的作用。我本人无论是在学习期间还是在工作之中都从这些词典中获益匪浅。然而，另一方面，我们也有必要逐渐学会使用英语国家出版社为其本国读者编写的词典。这些词典针
对其本国读者的水平和需要，其所受的限制少一些，精确度高一些，内容更充实一些。我的老师许国璋先生就曾叮嘱我，要使用原版词典。当时没有专为非英语国家学生编写的学习型词典，我也只好硬着头皮使用一般的原版词典。起初觉得似懂非懂，用着不方便，久而久之就尝到了甜头，在阐述词义方面觉得还是原版词典说得透彻。我体会，学英语好比学游泳，起初只能在教练的指导下在浅水区扑腾，掌握了一定的技能之后，不能老待在浅水区，而要进入深水区，乃至进入江海去畅游。怎样从浅水区进入深水区，进而进入江海呢？《韦氏大学英语词典》就是最好的助手。
这本词典是中美文化交流的桥梁。遇到语言方面的问题，求助于词典，中外莫不如此。两国人遇到问题查阅同一本词典，这就更容易找到共同语言。中国读者通过使用《韦氏大学英语词典》，直接体验美国学者怎样向美国读者对词语作出解释，就会感到拉近了和他们的距离，宛如生活在他们中间，加深了对他们的了解，也觉得他们更加亲切。因此我认为《韦氏大学英语词典》在中国出版，会成为加强中美文化交流、增进人民友谊的桥梁。
