俄罗斯伟大诗人普希金的名字，早已为我国广大读者所熟悉。从鲁迅、郭沫若、茅盾、郑振铎等前辈作家介绍和翻译普希金开始，经过后来者们的不断耕耘，至今，普希金的作品已经以众多的散本和不止一种的文集、全集的形式，出现在读者的面前。一九九九年六月六日是诗人诞生二百周年。俄罗斯把这一天作为国家节日举国欢庆。我国北京、上海等城市也在这一天举行了各种形式的庆祝活动。人民文学出版社还赶在这一天，出版了普希金在中国百年纪念文集《普希金与我》。中国人民对普希金的热爱与尊敬由此可见一斑。
亚历山大·谢尔盖耶维奇·普希金一七九九年六月六日，生于莫斯科一个没落的贵族家庭。父亲崇尚法国文化，伯父是诗人，家里有一个藏书很多的图书馆。当时俄国著名的诗人卡拉姆津、茹科夫斯基、巴丘什科夫等又常来他家做客。因此，他幼年时期即受到文学的，特别是诗的熏陶。他家里聘有一名法国教师，八岁时他就能用法文写诗。一八一一至一八一七年，他被送到当时沙皇专为贵族子弟设立的彼得堡皇村学校读书。他的真正的诗歌活动就是从这时开始的。一八一二年拿破仑的入侵和俄军反攻的胜利，激发了他的爱国主义情感。一八一四年写的《皇村回忆》得到大诗人杰尔查文的赏识，使他一跃跻身诗坛。一八一七年他从皇村学校毕业，以十品文官衔去外交部任职。俄国当时仍然是一个封建农奴制的国家，但是，由于进步的贵族知识分子反对暴政、争取自由的活动，俄罗斯开始进入一个民族觉醒时期。普希金在学校时即深受一些教授、校内外知识分子自由思想的影响，思想上、精神上已和当时这种进步运动合流。一八一七年写出的气势磅礴的《自由颂》，曾以手抄本的形式广为流传并引起思想界的极大重视。而以《自由颂》为代表的诗篇却触怒了沙皇。一八二○至一八二四年，诗人被流放到俄国南方。一八二四年七月，又被流放到他母亲的田庄——北方的普斯科夫城附近的米哈伊洛夫斯克村。而这时期诗人的名声与影响却与日俱增。一八二五年十二月十四日，十二月党人起义被残酷镇压。一八二五年末，俄皇亚历山大一世病逝，新登基的沙皇尼古拉一世为了欺骗舆论，于一八二六年九月“赦免”了诗人，把他召回莫斯科，但却一直把他置于宪兵的监视之下。一八三一年二月普希金和冈察洛娃结婚，五月迁居彼得堡，仍在外交部供职。一八三七年二月八日，在和法国波旁王朝的亡命徒乔治·丹特士决斗中普希金不幸受重伤，十日逝世。
但是，普希金一生的坎坷经历却给了他机遇，磨难与痛苦结出了丰硕的果实。普希金在流放中继续写各种题材的抒情诗，表达这个跃动着的进发着一种蓬勃朝气的时代的情绪，同时，又以其一部又一部涉及重大主题的长诗，给俄罗斯诗歌注入了新的活力。一八一七至一八二○年创作的戏谑长诗《鲁斯兰与柳德米拉》，一举震动了俄国诗坛。四年南方流放期间撰写的四部长诗《高加索的俘虏》、《强盗兄弟》、《巴赫奇萨拉伊的喷泉》和《茨冈人》，创造了俄国诗史上一个真正的浪漫主义时期。一八二三年动笔一八三○年完成的诗体长篇小说《叶甫盖尼·奥涅金》，则无可争辩地确立了他伟大诗人兼思想家的崇高地位。一八二五年在米哈伊洛夫斯克完成的人民性很强的现实主义诗剧《鲍里斯·戈都诺夫》，证明他在思想上已超越了十二月党人。生活要求诗人从浪漫主义的朦胧中回到现实中来。一八二五年以后，现实主义已取代浪漫主义，变成了他的创作的主流。一八二五年末的《努林伯爵》和一八二八年的《波尔塔瓦》，已经是属于现实主义的长诗了。为了对现实进行深入的思考，从三十年代起他转为以写散文为主，同时继续写一些叙事性和哲理性的抒情诗，一八三三年还完成了长诗《铜骑士》。
普希金用他的诗作、散文、诗体戏剧和诗体童话，开创了俄国文学的一个新时期，使落后于西欧的俄罗斯文学迅速地赶了上来。因此，他理所当然地被公认为俄罗斯近代文学的奠基人，俄罗斯文学语言的创建者，“俄罗斯诗歌的太阳”。
可以说，普希金一生的创作，就是十九世纪最初几十年间俄罗斯社会前进运动的形象的历史，是一幅映照社会生活各方面的生动的长卷。读普希金使我们想到的，首先是他的时代代言人、时代歌手的形象。从《自由颂》开始的一系列歌颂自由的诗篇，包括矛头直接指向沙皇和鞭挞恶官的讽刺诗，以及革命低潮时期一系列歌颂友谊的书信体诗，都是他所处的时代动荡的社会生活的反映。普希金在一八一八年《致恰阿达耶夫》里明白宣告：“趁胸中燃烧着自由之火，／趁心灵向往着荣誉之歌，俄的朋友，让我们用满腔催丽的激情报效祖国。”在同年另一首诗里又说：“而我这金不换的声音／正是俄罗斯人民的回声。”在一八二六年写的《先知》一诗里，他不无自豪地讲出了自己作为诗人的神圣使命：“上帝的声音向着我召唤：／……把海洋和大地统统走遍，佣我的语言把人心点燃。”而在他逝世前一年所写的《纪念碑》里，他又为自己的一生作了总结：“我将长时期地受到人民的尊敬和爱戴：／因为我用竖琴唤醒了人们善良的感情，／因为我歌颂过自由，在我的残酷的时代，俄还为倒下者呼吁同情。高尔基说过：“普希金之于俄国文学，正如达·芬奇之于欧洲艺术，同样是巨人。”历史证明，这种论断千真万确。
作为艺术家的诗人，他既讴歌推动时代前进的重大事件，也讴歌生活和它的丰富多彩。“我重新歌唱幻想、大自然和爱情，僳唱忠实的友谊，美好的人物……”(《致恰阿达耶夫》，1821)。多年的流放生涯，使他有机会接触社会底层，也有更多的机会游览祖国河山，抒发自己的郁闷的心绪。但同时他也绘制了一幅幅祖国山川的瑰丽的风景画：广大的乡村，浩瀚的草原，茂密的森林，静静的顿河，雄奇的高加索群山，自由喧腾的大海，南方迷人的夜晚，北方漫天的风雪…·一在它的作品里，这样的画面随处可见。无怪当时就有人说，读了普希金的诗，俄罗斯人的压抑的感情仿佛才得到了解放，俄罗斯人仿佛从普希金的诗中才认识了自己伟大的祖国，认识了祖国的美。这至少反映了当时知识分子的心态。
爱情的主题在普希金的抒情诗和长诗里，占有一个很大的分量。年轻的时候，他就把爱情看成一种神圣的感情。一八一四年他宣称：“当你陶醉于热烈的爱情，彻不可将爱情的缪斯遗忘；／世上没有比爱情更幸福的了：／一边爱，一边把爱情歌唱。”(《致巴丘什科夫》)。一八一六年更进一步：“爱情对我的折磨我很珍重，／纵然死也让我爱着死去！”(《心愿》)。因此，他的爱情诗总是那样缠绵细腻。一见倾心的爱慕，长相思的痛苦，嫉妒的折磨，欲言又止的羞怯，绝望中的倾吐。回忆中的甜蜜等常人会有的感情，都恰如其分地化作他的优美动人的诗句。一八二五年写的脍炙人口的《致克恩》(“我记得那美妙的瞬间……”)一诗，常常作为他的爱情诗的代表为我国读者反复诵读。在爱里，他尽情地摄取人间的美；在爱里，他真诚地寻找自己坎坷生涯的慰藉；在爱里，他不断地汲取创作的动力、生活的勇气。实际上，自由、爱情、友谊、大自然，在普希金的诗里，经常是同时出现的，并构成了诗人创作的整体。
普希金博览群书。他广泛地阅读了文艺复兴时期、启蒙运动时期大师们的作品，又把本国前辈大诗人看做自己的老师，因此，他继往开来，汲取一切先行者思想和诗艺上的长处，融会贯通，独辟蹊径，“走自己的路”。除了早期诗作还有些前人的影子以外，他很快就形成了自己的风格：立足于现实生活，从民间文学汲取营养，不断扩大语言的领域，运用各种诗韵，不断丰富和发展俄罗斯诗园。他把俄罗斯诗歌中已有的书信体、浪漫曲、哀诗体、对话体等体裁形式，在新的时代的背景上，发展到了淋漓尽致的地步。他还写了不少富有西欧和东方色彩的仿希腊诗、仿但丁诗、仿歌德诗、仿哈菲兹诗、仿古兰经诗等，从横的方面向世界延伸开去，进一步使俄罗斯诗园荡漾着世界诗园的气息。普希金的诗，简洁、准确、质朴、流畅、优美、和谐、丰满、完整。音乐性更是他的一个很重要的特点。有的评论家直接将他的诗称作语言的音乐，将诗人称作语言音乐家，说他的诗歌的描写力和音乐性获得了人世间艺术很少达到的统一，让人感到极大的艺术的愉悦。
