Author Description

威利斯·巴恩斯通（WillisBarnstone），诗人、学者、翻译家，1927年生于缅因州刘易斯顿，先后就读于鲍都因学院、哥伦比亚大学和耶鲁大学，退休前为印第安纳大学比较文学教授。曾于1975–1976年执教于阿根廷布宜诺斯艾利斯。1984–1985年作为富布莱特教授执教于北京外国语学院。出版著作四十余种，曾获艾米莉?狄金森诗歌奖、古根海姆基金会奖修金，两次获普利策奖提名。

西川，诗人、散文和随笔作家、翻译家，中央美术学院中国文学教授。曾短期任教于美国纽约大学东亚系（2007）、加拿大维多利亚大学写作系（2009）。出版有六部诗集、两部随笔集、两部评著、一部诗剧。此外还译有庞德、博尔赫斯、米沃什、盖瑞?施奈德等人的作品。曾获联合国教科文组织阿奇伯格奖修金（1997年）、鲁迅文学奖（2001年）、上海《东方早报》“文化中国十年人物大奖（2001-2011）”等。其诗歌和随笔被收入多种选本并被广泛译介，发表于二十多个国家的报刊杂志。纽约新方向出版社于2012年出版英译《蚊子志：西川诗选》，该书入围2013年度美国翻译图书奖并获该年度美国卢西恩?斯泰克亚洲翻译奖。

Book Abstract

所有这一切，错误的女人、错误的行为、错误的事件，所有这一切都是诗人的工具。一个诗人应当把所有的东西，甚至包括不幸，视为对他的馈赠。不幸、挫折、耻辱、失败，这都是我们的工具。
与其说灵魂寻找通向地狱或天堂之路，不如说灵魂把自己变成地狱或天堂。
我认为诗歌应当是匿名之作。比如说，如果我能选择，我会乐于让他人加工、重写我的一行诗、一篇小说，以便让它们流传下去，我希望我个人的名字会被忘掉，正如在适当的时候会是这样。所有作家都面临这个问题。
我认为对于一位作者来讲，最好是他能成为传统的一部分、语言的一部分，因为语言将使用下去而书籍会被遗忘。也许每一个时代都在一遍又一遍地重写同样的书，只是改变或加入一些细节。或许永恒之书皆相同。我们总是在重写古人写过的东西，而这就证明足够了。
我认为一个人总在死亡。每一次我们不能有所感受，不能有所发现，而只能机械地重复什么的时刻，就是死亡的时刻。生命也会随时到来。如果你单独拿某一天看看，你就会发现这一天里有许多次死亡，依我看，也有许多次诞生。但是我不想做一个行尸走肉。我尽量保持对事物的兴趣。我始终在接受着各种经验。这些经验会变成诗，变成短篇小说，变成寓言故事。我始终在接受它们，尽管我知道很多事情我只是机械地去做，去说，这意味着，与其说它们属于生命，不如说它们属于死亡。
每一次我们重读一本书，这本书就与从前稍有不同，而我们自己也与从前稍有不同。
这是我的命运，我命中注定要思考一切事物、一切经验，好像这一切的出现就是为了让我去运用它们来制造美。我知道我失败了，我还要一直失败下去，但这依然是我生存的惟一正当理由。继续体验事物，继续快乐，悲伤，茫然，困惑—我总是为事物所困惑，然后努力运用这些经验来创作诗歌。而在许许多多的经验中，最令我快乐的是阅读。啊，还有比阅读更好的事，那就是重读，深入到作品去中，丰富它，因为你已经读过它。我要劝大家少读些新书但要更多地重读。
当一首诗是真正的诗时，它迫使读者大声朗诵。这是对诗歌的检验。在阅读一首诗，或一部长篇小说，或一个小故事时，如果你觉得并不非得把它大声朗诵出来，那么这作品一定出了什么毛病。我多次注意到，尽管文字或许应当出诸笔端，但从本质上说它属于口头。既然它始于口头，它就不该脱离口头。
因为阅读毕竟是一件煞费苦心的事，正如经验也是一件煞费苦心的事。我每读到什么，什么就有所改变。我每写出什么，什么就一直被每一位读者改变着。每一种新经验都丰富了书本。你们能看到—我想到的是《圣经》—你们能看到它是怎样被一代代人所丰富起来的。
我很清楚，当但丁做他的地狱之梦、炼狱之梦时，他在想象事物，而弥尔顿则是在词句而不是在意象上下功夫。你也许会说，对一个诗人来讲，这种思维是允许的。是允许，但这就不像但丁那样能打动我。弥尔顿给我留下了印象，但仅仅是印象而已。而说到但丁，我便感到他的每一个词都卓尔不凡。我觉得他的每一个意象都本该如此。你不必去证明他诗行的合理性。你不必用中世纪的眼光去看待他。每个词都是完美的，每个词都得其所哉。你觉得但丁的诗句不需要任何人加工。而弥尔顿的很多诗句，至少在我看来，颇为拙劣。
