Book Abstract

《当我老了的时候》：
母亲的南归醒秋一夜翻来覆去地不曾好好安睡。她本来是和母亲对床而眠的，母亲的床，和她的床，相去不过六七尺远。她听见母亲帐中微微有鼾声，很调匀，很沉酣，有时衾褥轻轻转动一下，像母亲在梦中翻身，知道母亲正在沉睡。平常的时候，醒秋若是睡不着，必定唤醒母亲，母女两个谈谈日间的事，或过去的一切，消遣那漫漫的长夜；但今天晚上，醒秋却不敢唤她，因为母亲明天要乘火车到天津，到天津后改搭海轮回南，在路上有几天难受的颠顿，所以今夜必得让母亲好好安睡。
醒秋越是睡不着，心里便越是烦躁，她血管里的血也像她脑海里的思潮一般，翻腾进沸个不住，结果浑身发热，太阳穴的筋掣掣地跳动，再也不能在被窝里躺着了。她轻轻掀去被的半边，将身子靠着枕头坐起，两眼望着那微朦夜色的纱窗，一动不动地发怔。
这时候，胡同里的车马声和远处喧哗的市声，早已寂静，不过有时听见巡警喝问半夜尚在街游行的人，又远处风送来的几阵狗吠和一声两声小孩的啼哭，除此之外，外边真是万籁俱绝，大地像死了一般。但室中各种细微的声音，却真不少：桌上时钟的滴答滴答，过于干燥的板壁毕毕剥剥地爆裂，鼠儿悉悉索索的走动，飞虫头触窗纱，咚咚似小鼓的响……这些声音，白昼未尝没有，但我们偏偏听不见，更深夜静之际，便加倍的响亮与清晰，一一打人人的耳鼓。这才知道：白昼是“色”的世界，黑夜呢?应该说是“声”的世界了。
醒秋记得去年故乡山中，和母亲睡在她家一间所谓“绿槐书屋”中避暑。那间书屋，是醒秋的祖父在浙江做官时寄钱回家建筑以为归老之计的，位置在半山间。开窗一望，一座十几丈高的青山，几乎伸手可以摸到，松影绿压屋檐，潺湲的清泉似乎在枕畔流过。这清绝的影与声，往往把她携带到一个不可知的梦和诗的世界里去。
一夜，醒秋睡不着，便下床打开窗子，向外眺望。那夜的景色直教她永远难于忘却。天粘在四周山峰上似一张剪圆的暗云蓝纸，没有月光，但星光分外明朗，更有许多流萤，飘忽来去，像山的精灵们秉着炬火跳舞，满山熠熠烁烁，碎光流动。夜已三更，空间非常寂静，也没有一丝风，而耳中却听见四山幽籁、萧萧、瑟瑟、寥寥、飕飕，如万箔春蚕之食叶，如风水相激越，如落叶相擦磨。泉声忽高忽低，忽缓忽急，做弄琤琮曲调，与夏夜虫声，齐鸣竞奏。这些声响都像是有生命和情感似的，白昼潜伏着，一到夜间便像被什么神秘的金刚钻解放了它们的灵魂，在黑暗中一齐活动起来了。
醒秋的心和耳也似乎得了什么神通，凡世间不能和不易听见的声音，她此时居然能够听见。她仿佛听见松梢露珠的下坠，轻风和树叶温柔的亲吻，飞虫振翅的薨薨之声，繁星的絮语，草木的萌芽，宇宙大灵的叹息。
她坐在窗前，整个身心，沉浸在空灵凄清的感受里，一直到天明。
“明天母亲就要回南去了！”醒秋心里这样想念着，不觉涌起无限恋别的情绪。她的母亲一生没有到过北京，这次为醒秋的三弟完婚，才特别和父亲到京里来。婚事完毕以后，本想在北京好好逍遥一下，因为母亲半生生命都已消磨于大家庭家务的忙碌中间，难得有几时清闲岁月让她享受的。但她在北京还未住上一·个月，祖母却于南方的故乡不住寄信催她回去，说家务没有人照管，她自己又上了年纪，不能操劳的了。母亲对于祖母一向是绝。对服从，奉了严符之后，只好和此生必不能再来的北京作别，决定了南归之计。
醒秋那时在北京高等女子师范读书，因离家太远，只能暑假回乡一次。这一年母亲到京，她没回乡，由学校搬出来和母亲同住。母亲那时是寄居于一个表亲家里——这个表亲论行辈是醒秋的叔父——父亲却寄住在同一条胡同的某一亲戚家。
