我记得若干年前，第一次读《牛棚杂忆（水墨插图版）》，我一动不动地坐了整整一个下午，桌上的水一口也没有喝，完全沉浸在这本书里，跟随着季羡林先生忠实的记录，去了一趟那个离我很远的年代，我一会儿一阵冷汗，一会儿一阵痛苦，我愤怒、流泪，因为描写太过真实过于狼狈，我竟然还笑了两次，立刻我就为自己的笑感到惭愧和不忍。这是我做为一个读者真实的感受，实事求是地记下来。
因为自己对于《牛棚杂忆》的喜爱，我难以忘怀季羡林先生那“血和泪”的书写，那出于一个知识分子良知的忠实记录，以及他对于那个年代深刻的反思。我想做一本《牛棚杂忆》的插图本，因为季先生真实地描写非常具有画面感，我在阅读时脑袋里都常常会出现画面，所以做一本插图版本的《牛棚杂忆》成了心里的一个愿望。
在部门主任彭明榜老师的介绍下，我认识了画家马良书先生，一个有些沉默的人，我跟他沟通了我的想法，也等了很久很久，就在几乎有些等不下去要去问问画得怎么样了时，他发来了他的画，我很感动，因为他完全画出了我想要的那种感觉，不用问就知道他费了多久的时间去揣摩季羡林先生的模样、神情，才能画得那么神形兼备，他是个好画家，而且他真的秉持着对艺术认真负责的精神在做这件事情，我非常感谢他。

季羡林，中国著名文学家、语言学家、教育家和社会活动家，翻译家，散文家。曾历任中国科学院哲学社会科学部委员、北京大学副校长、中国社科院南亚研究所所长。早年留学国外，精通12国语言，通英、德、梵、巴利文，能阅俄、法文，尤其精于吐火罗文，是世界上仅有的精于此语言的几位学者之一。“梵学、佛学、吐火罗文研究并举，中国文学、比较文学、文艺理论研究齐飞”。著作等身。

Introduction

我感到悲哀，是因为我九死一生经历了这一场巨变，到头来竟然得不到一点了解，得不到一点同情，我并不要别人会全面理解，整体同情。事实上我对他们讲的只不过是零零碎碎、片片段段。有一些细节我甚至对家人、好友都没有讲过，至今还闷在我的心中。然而，我主观认为，就是那些片段就足以唤起别人的同情了。结果却是适得其反。于是我悲哀。
我孤独，是因为我感到，自己已届耄耋之年，在茫茫大地上，我一个人踽踽独行，前不见古人，后不见来者。年老的像三秋的树叶，逐渐飘零。年轻的对我来说像日本人所说的“新人类”那样互不理解。难道我就怀着这些秘密离开这个世界吗？于是我孤独。
我恐惧，是因为我怕这些千载难得的经验一旦泯灭，以千万人遭受难言的苦难为代价而换来的经验教训就难以发挥它的“社会效益”了。想再获得这样的教训恐怕是难之又难了。于是我恐惧。
在悲哀、孤独、恐惧之余，我还有一个牢固的信念。如果把这一场灾难的经过如实地写了出来，它将成为我们这个伟大民族的一面镜子。常在这一面镜子里照一照，会有无限的好处的。它会告诉我们，什么事情应当干，什么事情又不应当干，决没有任何坏处。
就这样，在反反复复考虑之后，我下定决心，自己来写。我在这里先郑重声明：我决不说半句谎言，决不添油加醋。我的经历是什么样子，我就写成什么样子。增之一分则太多，减之一分则太少。不管别人说什么，我都坦然处之，“只等秋风过耳边”。谎言取宠是一个品质问题，非我所能为，亦非我所愿为。我对自己的记忆力还是有信心的。经过了所谓“文化大革命”炼狱的洗礼，“曾经沧海难为水”，我现在什么都不怕。如果有人读了我写的东西感到不舒服，感到好像是揭了自己的疮疤；如果有人想对号入座，那我在这里先说上一声：悉听尊便。
《牛棚杂忆》后记
我从一九八八年三月四日起至一九八九年四月五日止，断断续续，写写停停，用了一年多的时间，为本书写了一本草稿。到了今年春天，我忽然心血来潮，决意把它抄出来。到今年六月三日，用了大约三个月的时间抄成定稿。草稿与定稿之间差别极大，几乎等于重写。
我原来为自己定下了一条守则：写的时候不要带刺儿，也不要带气儿，只是实事求是地完全客观地加以叙述。但是，我是一个有感情的活人，写着写着，不禁怒从心上起，泪自眼中流，刺儿也来了，气儿也来了。我没有办法，就这样吧。否则，我只能说谎了。定稿与草稿之间最大的差别就在于，定稿中的刺儿少了一点，气儿也减了一些。我实际上是不愿意这样干的，为了息事宁人，不得不尔。
我在书中提到的人物很不少的。细心的读者可以看出有三种情况：不提姓名，只提姓不提名，姓名皆提。前两种目的是为当事人讳，后一种只有一两个人，我认为这种人对社会主义社会危害极大，全名提出，让他永垂不朽，以警来者。
无论对哪一种人我都没有进行报复，事实俱在，此心可质天日！“文化大革命”后，我恢复了系主任，后来又“升了官”，在国家权力机构中也“飞黄腾达”过。我并不缺少报复的能力。
我只希望被我有形无形提到的人对我加以谅解。我写的是历史事实。我们“文化大革命”前的友谊，以及“文化大革命”后的友谊，我们都要加以爱护。
现在统计了一下，我平生著译的约有八百万字，其中百分之七八十是“文化大革命”以后的产品。如果“文化大革命”中我真遂了“自绝于人民”的愿，这些东西当然产生不出来。
这对我是一件大幸呢？还是不幸？我现在真还回答不上来。——由它去吧。
