《张恨水评传》：
门外大街上走过喊口号的、送报纸的、打牛奶的各种嘈杂的声音，两只手按在桌子上，钢笔帽打开了，一个字没法写。忽然觉得原先写过的字都空无一物，不知道还有哪句话能留下来。就像原先自己写过的都是宿命，都是《啼笑因缘》那样的一场梦、一场空。
一生起起伏伏，早已经荣辱不惊，也许写这么多的东西，只是满足自己作为才子佳人的那场梦。然而却在这场梦当中，却是一醉就是七十多年，不知道后人将如何评说，至少自己不曾后悔过。
其实那三次婚姻张恨水只是在追求自己的那个梦，也许他亏欠了那三个女人，也许又确实彼此得到了很多。
坐在书桌前慢慢地闭上眼，想着这许多的人和事，最对不起的人，可能会第一个想起来，但是闭上眼，他们就都涌了上来，可能自己想做才子却在万花丛中迷了眼。
现在是一个全新的世界了，外面的人外面的事，都那么的新，然而自己却是个半新半旧的人物，永远拥抱新的东西，但是又放不下旧爱。说自己是优柔寡断也好，说自己是锐意求新也好，总之这一生随着自己的性子，就这么样活下来，也没有后悔药可吃。也许写小说的人，大都是性情中人吧。
外面有人敲门，大概是送报纸的，但是却没有精神去开门。头疼得不得了，他眼前一片漆黑，两只手想抓住头，但却抓不住，就好像头有千斤重，一低头头就会滚到地上去一样。门外敲门的声音逐渐远去，又有一个声音叫起来，还有人在外面起哄。不知道这些人要干什么？难道这些人不知道已经解放十几年了，一切都是新的了么？好像是一间特别老的房子，门楣窗棂上还贴着过去的对联窗花，窗棂上还镂空的木雕，雕的花都已经透出油光。噢，是了，这就是家里祖上的老房子吧。
那些半大脚的仆妇们忙不迭地走来走去，好像是张家了不起的公子“洗三”的这一天，家里来人拜喜的送礼的络绎不绝。
不知道是为了图喜庆，还是驱鬼神，屁股被大葱打了三下。收生姥姥已经坐在正席上刚吃过饭，剩下的收生面已经招待给了亲戚好友。正对着香案的是一个热气腾腾的铜盆，以及痛哭的自己。
对面有香炉，有蜡烛，由于自己家好歹也是吃过朝廷俸禄，所以香炉里供的是五谷。侧面母亲的卧室也供着炕公炕母，都摆着满满当当的“桂花糕”和“糖烧饼”。自己为什么没有抓一块呢，到现在也没有想起来，可能那个时候的注意力都集中在冒着热气的铜盆上。
收生姥姥把自己拿大红缎子包了包，扯着下人的嗓子喊“吉时到了，添盆——”。一大队伍人带头，往盆里添一小勺清水，那个叫祖父的人高兴得花白胡子都颤抖了。旁边还有一个茶盘，那些穿长袍大褂叔叔婶婶把银票放进茶盘里，还有父亲的友人们也都把银票放在茶盘里。花白胡子一颤一颤的祖父，像下饺子一样，把金银锞子和铜圆，还有长命锁和手镯子放在铜盆里，收生姥姥忙不迭地喊着“长流水，聪明伶俐”。奶奶放进来红枣花生桂圆栗子荔枝，收生姥姥又不迭地喊“早儿立子，连生贵子，连中三元”。
大家行礼如仪后各自落座，收生姥姥便拿起棒槌往盆里搅和，一边搅和一边说：“一搅两搅连三搅，哥哥领着弟弟跑，七十儿八十儿、歪毛儿淘气儿，稀里呼噜都来了。”然后把孩子解开大红缎子，抱到盆里浇水，他觉得身上起了个寒噤，一勺清水浇到了屁股上，不禁咧开嘴哇哇抗议起来。日后是每天能写几千字的作家，那个时候却一个字也说不出来，他只想说“水凉”，不知道有什么方法可以抗议。他的哭声对于这个世界来说如此微弱，对于如此抗议，反引得大家一阵狂喜。
周围又响起一阵贺喜道好的声音，纷纷向父亲和祖父作揖，“响盆了响盆了，大吉大利啊。”收生姥姥念叨个没完没了，又往头上浇了一勺凉水，念叨着：“先洗头，作王侯；后洗腰，一辈到比一辈高；洗洗蛋，做知县；洗洗沟，做知州！”大家哄堂大笑，自己哇哇大哭着无所适从。
没想到紧跟着还有。下面是一个艾叶球，点着了，冒着一缕青烟逼了过来，还有一片辣辣的老姜拍在了自己的脑门上。那团冒烟的东西，在脑门上烧了很久才拿走，全不管自己已哭得昏天黑地。这是一场旧时代的狂欢吧。
的确是狂欢，他们还没完，本来没有几根头发，居然还要拿梳子来梳头，收生姥姥一定可以去当说书的先生了。她还在说：“三梳子，两拢子，长大戴个红顶子；左描眉，右打鬓，找个媳妇准四趁；刷刷牙，漱漱口，跟人说话免丢丑。” 还以为完事了，没想到她又剥了个熟鸡蛋，滚烫的鸡蛋白滚在自己脸上，高声说：“鸡蛋滚滚脸，脸似鸡蛋皮，柳红似白的，真正是爱人儿。”孩子的哭声已经震天响了，但周围的人说因为哭得响，是可喜可贺之事。折腾够了之后，终于把自己从盆里捞出来，捆在蜡烛包里，可怕的是拿了一根大葱，在身上抽了三下，又说口诀：“一打聪明，二打伶俐。”
