若泽·毛罗·德瓦斯康塞洛斯（1920—1984），1920年2月26日出生于巴西里约热内卢州班古市。自幼家境贫寒，有十一个兄弟姐妹。在纳塔尔市的舅舅家长大，自己学会了认字看书，九岁时获得游泳和足球冠军。不安分的天性使其涉足广泛：曾学医两年，后又改学绘画、法律和哲学。
若泽·毛罗·德瓦斯康塞洛斯经历坎坷，曾当过渔夫、教师、模特、舞蹈演员、侍应生、电影电视及话剧演员。曾到欧洲和巴西各地旅行。他作品中的人物和情景许多都来自于他丰富的生活经历。
若泽·毛罗·德瓦斯康塞洛斯常说：“文学是最复杂的艺术，因为它要赋予作品绘画的色彩和线条、音乐的声音和旋律，以及动感。写作是我找到的用以展现我的生活经历、传递我的喜怒哀乐和一种久被遗忘的感情——温柔——的方式。没有温柔的生活毫无意义”。
作家于1984年6月24日在圣保罗去世。

一棵会说话的甜橙树
这个主意是妈妈出的。
“今天，咱们大家都去看房子。”
托托卡把我叫到一边，小声对我说：
“你要是敢说咱们已经去看过新房子，瞧我揍扁了你。”
可是，我根本没有想到这个。
我们一大群人走在街上。格洛里亚拉着我的手，命令我连一分钟都不许松开。我拉着路易斯的手。
“妈妈，咱们什么时候搬家？”
妈妈有些悲伤地回答格洛里亚说：
“圣诞节之后两天，咱们就必须开始收拾行李了。”
她的声音听起来很累很累。我为她难过，妈妈天生是干活的命。工厂开工的时候她才六岁，就被送进去了。他们让妈妈坐在一张台子上，她必须不停地清洗那些铁家伙。她那么小，自己从台子上下不来，结果常常尿裤子。她从来没有进过学校，也不识字。我知道了她的故事以后特别伤心，我发誓等我当上诗人、变成一个有知识的人的时候，我要给她念我写的诗……
圣诞节首先来到了商场店铺，所有的玻璃门窗上都画上了圣诞老人的像。好多人正在买圣诞贺卡，这样，到了圣诞节那天就不用去商店挤来挤去。我隐约感到自己有一个愿望，希望这次圣婴是专为我一个人降生的，这样，等我到了懂事的年龄，也许就会变得好一点儿。

面对新房子，大家惊呆了。这座房子稍微有点儿小。托托卡帮妈妈扭开锁住院门的铁丝，我们走了进去。格洛里亚松开了我的手，忘记自己已经是一个大姑娘了，跑过去一下抱住了芒果树。

托托卡抱住了罗望子树。
什么都没有给我剩。我看着格洛里亚，几乎要哭了。
“那我呢，格格？”
“快去后院，那里肯定还有树，傻瓜。”
我跑到后院，可是，这里只有一些长得很高的龙爪草、几棵带刺的老甜橙树，靠近水沟的地方有一棵小小的甜橙树。我很失望。大家都在看新家的各个房间，分配谁应该住哪间。我拉了一下格洛里亚的裙子：
“后院什么都没有。”
“你不会找。等着，一会儿我给你找一棵树。”
过了一会儿，她和我一起来到后院。她看了看甜橙树。
“你不喜欢那一棵？瞧，多漂亮的甜橙树啊。”
我哪棵都不喜欢，连那棵我也不喜欢，没有一棵是我看得上的，它们全都带好多刺儿。
“我宁愿要这棵甜橙树，也不要那些难看的树。”
“在哪儿？”
我们走到树边。
“多漂亮的甜橙树啊！瞧，连一个刺都没有，它多有特点啊，从老远的地方就能看出它是一棵甜橙树。我要是你，才不要别的树呢。”
“可是，我就想要一棵大树。”
“你可想好了，泽泽，它现在是小，可是，肯定能长成一棵高大的甜橙树，它会和你一起长大，你们两个互相了解，就像亲兄弟一样。你注意它的树枝了吗？没错，它只有一根树枝，可是，它多像一匹小马，等着你骑上去呢。”
我觉得自己是世界上最倒霉的人，我想起家里的一个酒瓶上画的苏格兰天使。拉拉说：“这个是我。”格洛里亚指着另一个说那个是她。托托卡也选中了一个。我呢？我就是第四个苏格兰天使，他在最后面，只露出一个小脑袋，几乎连翅膀都看不见，根本就不是一个完整的天使……我总是那个垫底的。等我长大了，让你们好好看看。我要买下整个亚马逊森林，所有长得和天那么高的大树全是我的。我还要买一仓库酒瓶，上面全是天使，谁也别想得到一片翅膀。
我垂头丧气，背靠着甜橙树坐在地上。格洛里亚笑着走开了。
“一会儿你就不生气了，泽泽，你会发现我说的有道理。”
我用一根小棍抠着地面，不再哼唧了。这时，我听到一个声音在说话，我不知道它是从哪儿传来的，但是，离我的心很近。
“我认为你姐姐说的有道理。”
“所有的人都有道理，就是我没有。”
“不是这样的，你好好看看我，你就知道她有道理了。”
我吓得一下子站了起来，看了一眼小树，觉得很奇怪。我以前总爱和所有的东西聊天，所以，我以为自己刚刚听到的是我心里的那只小鸟的声音。
“你真的会说话？”
“你不是听见了吗？”
它轻轻地笑了一下。我几乎要大叫着逃出后院去。可是，好奇心拴住了我。
“你用哪个部位说话？”

我有点儿拿不定主意，可是看到它那么小，我就不再害怕了。我把耳朵贴到树的身上，隐约听到“咚……咚……”的声音。
“听见了吗？”
“告诉我，大家都知道你会说话吗？”
“不，只有你一个人知道。”
“真的？”
“我发誓。有一个仙女跟我说，要是一个和你一模一样的小男孩跟我交朋友，我就会说话，而且我就会非常非常开心。”
“那你愿意等等吗？”
“等什么？”
“等我搬过来啊。可能要等一个多星期呢，到那个时候，你不会忘记怎么说话吧？”
“绝对不会。不过，我只跟你说话。你不想试试我有多光滑？”
