艺术家与经销商之间的协议在一定程度上是约束性的，因此，艺术家经常同时向多家需求不一的画廊推荐自己的作品。对艺术家来说，这样做的好处是可以充分利用自身条件，不仅确保作品得到最好的销路，还可以更自由地发挥创意；坏处则是付出劳动后不一定能得到报酬。在这种情况下，艺术家和经销商达成协议，艺术家将系列作品交给经销商，经销商会在出售后再付款给艺术家。为了鼓励经销商尽最大努力推销艺术品，经销商对艺术家直接出售给收藏者有索赔的权利。然而，因为代理人的存在，艺术家与直接收购者有了议价的动力。除了以上谈到的复杂情况，调查显示，经销商和艺术家协议的最常见的形式是建立在互信基础上的非正式协议，即经销商通过极力推销艺术品来换取艺术家的作品专供以及利润抽成。对经销商来说，应该提前得知抽成比例（根据推广程度，一般在30%到80%之间）。极少有经销商尝试奏效但是有风险的做法，如提前付款或向抱着投资目的的代理人采购。尝试这些做法的经销商必定有着殷厚的资产，或有支持和投资某个艺术家的强烈动机。决定是否打折的因素很多，包括经销商与客户的亲密度、付款期限、经销规模、经销商偏好的艺术品类以及艺术家与经销商的关系。如果经销商独家代理某个艺术家，那么他会通过支持其报价来予以维护。偶然代理某个艺术家作品的经销商则截然不同，他们只关心交易达成与否，即使将艺术品以低于正常市价出售也无所谓。
