《人格智商》：
为了准确界定这种特殊的智力形式，研究者们认真观察了人们在特定情景之下的表现，然后努力辨识出那些具有共性的能力。比如，言语理解能力包括词语知识（词汇）、句子理解以及某些形式的逻辑推理能力。这种智力或者其他任何形式的智力的界定过程就是一种逆向工程：研究人员先观察人们所能解决的问题，然后尝试找出正确解决该问题所需要的能力。
在探究人们如何解决问题的研究当中，1905年，阿尔弗雷德·比奈关于什么样的学生更适应正规学校教育环境的分析是最成功的案例之一。1904年，法国政府任命了一个由教育工作者和科学家组成的委员会，这个委员会的任务是找到一套客观的评价方法，以确定哪些孩子能够应对公立教育机构学习的任务，而哪些孩子是“智力低下”（按照当时的说法）且需要特殊帮助的。①比奈被任命为该委员会的一员，也参与完成政府所布置的这项任务。
比奈根据自己对课堂教学情况的观察得出了这样的推理：那些成功的学生注意力集中，服从指令，模仿能力、言语理解及知识记忆等能力强。为了检验这些能力到底是不是影响学习成绩的重要因素，比奈与同事西奥多-西蒙一起设计了一个心理测试问卷，评估孩子们在这些方面的能力。测试问卷包含一些这样题目：首先，测试者要求孩子们“跟我学”：拍手，双手上举，再抬起一只脚。如果孩子根据指令模仿了测试者的动作，就算是通过了这道题目的测试。测试中还有这样的题目：测试者提出诸如“你的头在哪里”、“你的鼻子在哪里”，还有“你的眉毛在哪里”等问题，然后让孩子指出自己身上的这些部位。测试词汇掌握情况的办法是直接问孩子们某些词汇的定义（如：什么是狗），而测试记忆力的方法则是让孩子们重复各种长度的句子。
比奈的调查问卷确实可以准确预测哪些孩子学习成绩会更好，这说明他成功地分析出了在这种情境下要有好表现都需要哪些核心能力。虽然有些人指出了这种方法的一个问题：比奈的方法当中用到的都是需要受试者理解词汇和语言的问题，只有极少数问题需要受试对象运用视觉和空间想象能力，考察孩子社交能力的问题则根本没有。但不管怎么说，比奈和西蒙的研究在很大程度上推动了该领域研究的进步，不过这只是非常原始的智力评估研究。如今，在回顾这些早期的研究成果时，学者们会把早期研究手段衡量的能力称为言语理解智力。
