Book Abstract

在《飞向成功》一书中，有一个很经典的故事。其大意是小兔子被送进了动物学校，它最喜欢跑步课，并且总是得第一；最不喜欢的则是游泳课，一上游泳课它就非常痛苦。但是兔爸爸和兔妈妈要求小兔子什么都学，不允许它有所放弃。小兔子只好每天垂头丧气地到学校上学，老师问它是不是在为游泳太差而烦恼，小兔子点点头，盼望得到老师的帮助。老师说，其实这个问题很好解决，你的跑步是强项但游泳是弱项，这样好了，你以后不用上跑步课了，可以专心练习游泳……中国有句古话：只要功夫深，铁杵磨成针。讲的是只要坚持不懈，就一定能成功。但是看了上面这个寓言后，我们可能都会意识到，小兔子根本不是学游泳的料，即使再刻苦它也不会成为游泳能手；相反，如果训练得法，它也许会成为跑步冠军。遗憾的是，在现实生活中我们做了太多让兔子去游泳、让鸭子去跑步的傻事却浑然不知。许多孩子也因此而忍受着无数次的挫折和失败，最终变成平庸的人。
一些研究发现，人类有四百多种优势。这些优势本身的数量并不重要，最重要的是，作为父母，你应该帮助孩子知道自己的优势是什么。之后要做的则是帮助孩子将学习、生活、工作乃至事业发展都建立在他的优势之上，这样孩子才可能会成功。从成功心理学的角度来讲，判断一个人是不是成功，最主要的是看他是否最大限度地发挥了自己的优势。研究发现，尽管路径各异，但成功者都有一个共同点，就是善于“扬长避短”。传统上我们强调弥补缺点，纠正不足，并以此来定义“进步”。而事实上，当人们把精力和时间用于弥补缺点时，就无暇顾及增强和发挥优势了；更何况任何人的欠缺都比才干多得多，而且大部分的欠缺是无法弥补的。
每一个人都有天生的优势，教育的目的就在于发现每一个孩子的优势并发挥f也们的优势。这样的教育，才能让每一个孩子都能成功。
“优势”最简单、最有用的定义是指那些让你感到自己很强大的事。在最强的方面才会取得最大的进步，在你的优势方面，你才会最有求知欲，最具创造力，也最乐于学习新事物。
失败并不是成功之母。对失败的研究并不能帮助我们学到什么成功的经验，一个人或一个机构要想成功就要靠扩展优势而不是简单地弥补弱势。
——【美】马库斯·白金汉发现孩子听过小兔子的故事后，很多父母可能都会发出疑问：虽然这个故事很精彩，但在现实生活中却很难准确地把握。比如“我怎么知道自己的孩子到底是兔子还是鸭子”？对此，成功心理学创始人之一、盖洛普名誉董事长唐纳德·克利夫顿认为，你需要长期细致地观察孩子有什么样的特殊兴趣和爱好，当然，这种爱好不是父母强加的，而是孩子在不经意间流露出来的。比如，当孩子看到别人在做某件事时，他是否会表现出跃跃欲试的召唤感——“我也想做这件事”；当孩子完成一件事时，他是否会有一种满足感或欣慰感；他在做某类事情时非常快，无师自通，这是一个重要信号；当他做某类事情时，他不是一步一步去做，而是行云流水般地一气呵成，这也是一个信号。
事实上，很多父母也一定会有这样的体会：你发现自己在做许多事情时需要学习，需要不断地去修正和演练。而在做另外一些事情时，却几乎是自发的，不用想就本能地完成了这些事情。这就是你的优势。当然，另外一种了解“你是谁”的方式就是向专业公司寻求咨询和帮助。这种方法用在孩子身上同样有效。
从成功心理学的角度来看，过去我们所推崇的“铁杵磨成针”，并不是一个最优化的过程，最优化的过程应该是把铁直接做成针，或者把铁直接做成铁杵，而不是先把铁做成铁杵，然后再把它磨成针。任何一个企业都要追求效益及生产的最佳配置。在生产过程中，把铁杵磨成针显然不是一种最佳配置。我们并不排斥这个寓言所要揭示的道理，比如“持之以恒”，但是我们所讲的“持之以恒”绝不是这种表现。如果你本来没有这种优势，而你却一再地坚持和不放弃，希望将你的弱势变成优势，那我们建议你一定要转变做法，因为这是不可能实现的，代价也是巨大的。
所以，心理学家们建议，铁杵继续当好铁杵，在自己的岗位上争创一流，同时去买一根针来缝衣服。同样，让兔子去跑步，让鸭子去游泳！因为，当人们把精力用于弥补缺点时，就无暇顾及发挥优势了。
