Book Abstract

每种文明都有自己的盲点。河山这本大书，见仁见智，各人读来大不一样。

网上的帖子说，没到玉龙雪山的人不算到过丽江，如此，大旅行家徐霞客就算白跑一趟丽江了。读他的《滇游日记》，文中虽然多次提到玉龙雪山，但他住在木府的半个月里，竟一次也没有前往这座“雪幕其顶，云气郁勃”的雪山，他更感兴趣的是丽江的山川水系和纳西族文化。我不禁想到美国探险家约瑟夫·洛克，他1922年来到丽江后，特地在玉龙雪山脚下的雪嵩村找了个院子，推窗就可以望见皑皑雪峰。他在这里生活了二十多年，还考察过四川的几座雪山。垂暮之年，他在给友人的信中写道：“与其躺在夏威夷的床上，我更愿意在丽江玉龙雪山的鲜花丛中死去。”

徐霞客为什么对玉龙雪山毫无兴趣？按《中国国家地理》杂志执行总编单之蔷先生的观点：首先，古人不欣赏极高山，古代享有盛誉的五岳、黄山，都是中低山；其次，古人不能欣赏雪山与冰川之美。他举例说，杜甫在成都住了几年，从没去看川西大雪山，只留下一行“窗含西岭千秋雪”的诗句；岷山的主峰雪宝顶海拔5588米，有永久积雪和冰川，离李白的家乡江油市不远，而李白似乎没兴趣提起它。两位大诗人歌咏过无数名山，但都是东部低矮的山头。

单之蔷在呼唤一种新的风景美学，他说：“这种审美观主要是指对雪峰、冰川和湿地的认识，这种审美观的基础是现代科学而不是传统文化。”这种理论付诸行动，就是2005年《中国国家地理》的“选美中国”专题，评选结果是一份出人意料的名单：最美的景观多数分布在地广人稀的西部，最美的山第一名是鲜为人知的南迦巴瓦峰。将这份名单与5批177处国家级风景名胜区比较就会发现，后者多分布在人烟稠密的东部地区。这两份名单体现了新旧两种审美观的巨大差异。

我很认同他的观点。中国传统的山水审美的确存在盲区。中国人对自然山水的审美，是从诗画中引申出来的，最好的山水是“如诗”、“入画”。中国的诗人很少歌咏荒野，画家们总要在山水图卷中安插几间茅屋、三两个隐士，他们描绘的是适合人类栖居的家园，而非自然。宋代以后，中国人的审美越来越精致，沉溺于小桥流水、园林假山、梅兰竹菊等狭隘的意境，缺乏“大漠孤烟直，长河落日圆”的宏大气象。欧洲也一样，人们从艺术家的油画里吸收灵感，设计园林，评论风景，他们也不喜欢沼泽。1998年，美学家艾伦·卡尔松专门做过一个讲座《欣赏沼泽：湿地的艰深之美》，讨论了在西方文化中一向被认为污秽、诡异而凌乱的湿地如何成为审美对象的问题。

就是矗立在沙漠上的一个王朝。更有意思的是，我在鄂尔多斯市采访，发现当地近年来耗费巨资打造的康巴什新城——中国最著名的一座“鬼城”，也建在沙漠上。

前言观看地理景观之眼

我出生于闽西北山区，但最吸引我的自然景观都在祖国的大西北。旅游就是感受差异，差异越大，越让我们震撼。高原、沙漠、冰川、雪山、绿洲、草原、内陆河，都让我深深迷恋。朋友问我：跑过那么多地方，哪里的景观最让你感动？这是一个困难的问题，犹如母亲挑选她最疼爱的子女，但我的选择范围不出西藏、新疆和内蒙古。

第一次去西藏，我在阿里地区转了一个多月，只跑了噶尔、日土、扎达、普兰和吉隆五县，连布达拉宫都没空上去。我们寻找象雄王朝和古格王朝的废墟。难以想象，这片凛冽而荒芜的高寒之地，散落着如此众多的岩画、寺庙、佛塔、壁画、修行洞、玛尼堆、墓冢，到处是文明的碎片。有一次，我们跟着日土的牧民去看岩画，没有路，越野车在连绵起伏的荒漠上无休无止地颠簸，最后来到一个寸草不生的山谷。岩壁上镌刻着一些稚拙的简笔线条画，一个个小人背负重物，排成长列，像是描绘整个部族迁徙；还有位穿连衣裙的时尚女性，裙长及膝，与如今的藏族妇女服饰截然不同。太阳照耀着空荡荡的山谷，热气蒸腾，对面的大山仿佛变成了流体，在空气中微微摇动。高原永恒，人类来来往往。许多年前，一个部落经过这里，有人偶然在岩壁上留下一些图画，也留给我们无穷的困惑：他们是谁？从哪里来？又到哪里去？

初次去新疆，围着天山转了一个多月，整天都在路上奔波，历经40多个县市，比许多土生土长的新疆人走得都要多。我们考察天山的古道系统，不但踏勘丝绸之路中道和北道，还寻访横穿天山山脉的夏塔、乌孙、车师、小南路、天山庙等小道。印象最深的是别迭里山口，阿克苏地区乌什县通往吉尔吉斯斯坦的一个达坂，我相信玄奘就是从这个山口前往中亚的。这条丝绸古道已经荒废了大半个世纪，渺无人烟，山口前有座孤零零的汉唐烽燧。当地人说，前面再无居民点，只有边防军的一个哨所，守卫着无人翻越的冰雪隘口。我们沿着别迭里河又往前开了三四十公里，看到了清末民初的边卡遗迹，看到了牧民用碎石垒砌的简易围栏，河谷漫长得一如史前世纪，耳边唯闻空洞的溪声。我觉得自己行驶在地老天荒里，时光纷纷塌陷，一种混合着历史和自然的彻骨荒凉的气息，迎面扑来。

有人说沙漠上建不起城市，毛乌素沙漠里的统万城不知道应该看成一个例证还是反证。这是南北朝时期大夏国赫连勃勃建造的都城，坐落在内蒙古鄂尔多斯市与陕西交界处，北魏后改夏州，宋代就被风沙掩埋了，直到清代被重新发现。著名历史地理学家侯仁之不相信赫连勃勃会把都城建在沙漠上，认为是人类活动造成土地沙化，毁了统万城。我注意到，地理学界有不同的看法：最近的研究表明，古城底下就是沙漠，大夏就是矗立在沙漠上的一个王朝。更有意思的是，我在鄂尔多斯市采访，发现当地近年来耗费巨资打造的康巴什新城——中国最著名的一座“鬼城”，也建在沙漠上。
