第一，团体心理辅导感染力强，影响广泛。个别心理咨询是咨询员与当事人单向或双向沟通的过程，而团体心理辅导是多向沟通的过程。对每一个当事人来说，都存在多个影响源。每个成员不仅自己接受他人的帮助，也可以帮助其他成员。此外，在团体情境中，每个成员可以同时学习模仿多个团体成员的适应行为，从多个角度洞察自己。在团体心理辅导过程中，成员之间相互支持，集思广益，共同探寻解决问题的办法，减少了对咨询员的依赖。
第二，团体心理辅导效率高，省时、省力。与个别心理咨询相比，团体心理辅导是一个咨询者对多个成员，比一对一的个别心理咨询，不但增加了咨询的人数，而且节省咨询的时间与人力。团体心理辅导的经济效能还体现在防患于未然，避免问题的发生，利用集思广益的研讨方法，谋求问题发生后的处理方式，这是解决问题最经济的方法。
第三，团体心理辅导的效果容易巩固。团体心理辅导创造了一个类似真实的社会生活情境，为参加者提供了社交的机会，为他们真实地表现自己提供了情境。在充满信任的良好气氛中，通过示范、模仿训练等方法，参加者可以尝试与他人建立良好的人际关系。如果在团体中的行为能有所改变，这种改变会延伸到团体之外的现实生活中去，即是辅导的结果容易迁移到日常生活中去。
第四，团体心理辅导特别适用于人际适应不良的人。团体心理辅导对于人际适应不良的人有特殊的作用。一般的青少年缺乏社会化的经验，在学校或社会上，经常发生人际关系冲突或不愿与人接触的现象，这样的青少年可以参加团体心理辅导。那些长年与同桌、同事不能相处的人，可经由团体心理辅导改善对人际关系的适应。有些人因缺乏客观的自我评价、缺乏对他人的信任、过分依赖或过分武断，难以与他人建立和保持良好、协调的人际关系，也可以通过团体心理辅导予以矫正。
