Author Description

唐娜·威特默（Donna S.Wittmer），1985年毕业于锡拉丘兹大学，获得幼儿、家庭和社区研究领域的博士学位。她是儿童早期教育专业的教授，在科罗拉多大学任教17年，2008年1月获得荣誉退休职位。威特默还是许多儿童早期教育期刊的作者、各种早期教育和发展教材的合著者。她所著的The importance of peers in the early years于2009年在 ZERO TO THREE 出版社出版。

Book Abstract

民族志研究使用开放式的情境访谈、家访、录像录音以及以严格的时间顺序完整记录观察对象所使用的词汇、短语和句子的笔记作为材料。访谈者的陈述性描述也要尽快进行记录，以免丢失关键事实、印象或情境信息等。研究者关注的不仅是激动人心的事件，更重要的是日常生活中平凡的行为和事物。由于这一类研究会收集到大量数据，研究者必须谨慎地对数据中表现出的模式、相似性和差异进行分析。这一过程背后的问题可以表述成“我们看到了什么？”“它们代表了什么含义？”“观察到的行为对儿童发展有着怎样的意义？”

社会指数

社会指数是反映特定人群健康程度的一类数据指标。例如，卫生保健行业非常重视对疾病的传播与演变的追踪。2003年，发生在中国的SARS传染病便进行了数据追踪。借此，政策的制定者能够有效地制定相关的干预与预防政策，研究人员也能集中精力探究疾病的源头、传播、救治乃至根治的方案等。

社会指数并不代表因果关系。数据能够告诉我们贫穷现象呈上升趋势，或某年2岁儿童的疫苗接种程度高于之前的某年，或全职父亲的比率有所上升等。但这些信息并不能告诉我们为何会发生这样的变化。社会指数通常反映了对相关领域的研究需求，并为探求如何改进人类生活质量的研究指明了方向。
