Author Description

特里·巴雷特（Terry Barrett），美国艺术批评家，北德克萨斯大学艺术教育系教授，俄亥俄州立大学名誉教授。曾荣获美国国家艺术教育协会“杰出教学奖”，著作包括《创作艺术：形式与意义》《为什么这是艺术？当代艺术的审美与批判》《阐释艺术：反思、惊诧与反应》《批评艺术：理解当代》等。巴雷特曾举办了三十多次个展和群展，发表大量摄影作品和批评文章。目前，巴雷特仍任职于美国国家艺术教育协会、德克萨斯艺术教育协会、艺术理论与教育基金会（FATE）以及院校艺术协会等机构。

何积惠，1950年生，从事翻译工作逾三十载。除在报刊杂志上发表译作外，迄今出版著作有《世界摄影艺术图典》（合著），译著有《数码摄影手册》《创意摄影的奥秘》《招摇：另类人体宣言》《从影后到王妃：格蕾丝·凯利的情与爱》及《1985年以来的当代艺术理论》（合译）等。

第一章关于艺术批评
本书向读者介绍阅读和进行影像批评的方法，从而使读者学会运用批评步骤来更好地欣赏影像。遗憾的是，我们通常不会把批评看作欣赏，因为在日常语汇中，“批评”这个术语寓有负面的内涵：通常用来指负面评价或者不赞成的行为。
在大众传媒中，批评家是以艺术法官的面目出现的。报刊评论员用星号给餐馆饭店定级别高低，批评家用拇指向上、向下的符号或通过1到10的数字来评估电影，不断地强化着批评的评判侧面。在批评家写下的所有文字中，被援引最为频繁的当推那些评判之语，“本演出季的最佳戏剧！”“令人眼花缭乱！”“精妙绝伦！”这些文字在电影和戏剧广告中是用黑体字来予以彰显的，因为这些文字有助于提高票房。但它们在批评家的全部文字量中只不过是寥寥数语，而且它们一向是在脱离语境的情况下被援引的。这些片言只语对我们理解一出戏或一部电影所起的作用是微乎其微的。
批评家就是喜爱艺术并选择以毕生精力来从事艺术方面的思索和写作的作家。美国黑人文化研究批评家兼学者贝尔·胡克斯（bell hooks）在谈到写作时这样写道：“童年时代从文字魔力中受到的诱惑，使我至今仍是又写又读，心醉神迷，难以自拔。我亲笔草拟所有著作的初稿，然后大声朗读，通过文字绘声绘色地演绎去聆听和感受它们。我希望自己有把握同文字展开一场搏斗，用这种方式使它们获得生命和呼吸，从我激情澎湃的内心喷薄而出。”如今以艺术批评写作为业的诗人彼得·施捷达尔（Peter Schjeldahl）写道：“我经常从艺术中得到体验的机会。在激情迸发的时刻，他人的眼睛和心灵成了我的眼睛和心灵，带我去感受和体验某种东西，甚至是去体验一切，体验整个世界。”而对于1989年起一直为《洛杉矶时报》（Los Angeles Times）撰写艺术评论的克里斯托弗·奈特（Christopher Knight）来说，他之所以以博物馆策展人的身份从事批评写作并大获成功全都起源于他想进一步亲近艺术：“我对艺术谋生之道萌发兴趣的原因，首先是为了接近艺术和艺术家。我发现，在博物馆里，大部分的工作时间都是围绕着受托人和文案资料的。”
有些批评家是因为这一术语的负面内涵而不愿意被称作批评家的。经常为《艺术论坛》（Art forum）撰稿的艺术批评家兼诗人勒内·理查德（Rene Richard）说：“就事实而论，我不是一名艺术批评家。我是一名艺术爱好者。我希望激起世人对曾激励我对他们的作品说点儿什么的艺术家的兴趣。”为《乡村之声》（Village Voice）撰写戏剧评论的迈克尔·范戈德（Michael Feingold）说：“批评理应赞美艺术之善，而不该沉湎于对其恶的愤慨。”同样，露西·利帕德（Lucy Lippard）对其作出批评的艺术通常是持支持态度的。但她又说，她有时候会因不曾提出批评，完全不像一个批评家而受到指责。她回应道：“那样对于我倒是正中下怀，因为不管怎么说，我从来都不喜欢这个术语。它的负面内涵把批评家置于同艺术家根本对立的地位。”她和其他批评家都不希望被看成是同艺术家相对立的。
