Author Description

钱满素，1946年生于上海，哈佛大学美国文明史博士，中国社会科学院外文所研究员，主要从事美国文明史研究。著有《美国自由主义的历史变迁》《爱默生和中国——对个人主义的反思》（东方出版社2018年修订本）等；论文集《飞出笼子去唱》《一个大众社会的诞生》。主编过《绅士谋国：美国缔造者》《美国文明读本：缔造美利坚的40篇经典文献》《韦斯特小说集》等书。发表过有关美国历史、文学、政治的论文和文章多篇。

Book Abstract

这个集子有点杂，时间跨度有三四十年，最早的发表在1983 年，最晚的在2017 年；内容上涉及文学、历史、政治、中国、美国等；形式也不一样，包括文章、书评、讲座、访谈，不过话说回来，这“杂”也正是我四十年来做研究的真实写照。

世界本来就是无所不包，人生也本来就是五味杂陈，我相信一个研究者最持久的动力不是来自学位或职称，而是来自兴趣。1970 年代末，“文革”终于结束，中国迎来改革开放，于是有了我们这一代在社会上游离多年的大龄学生。青少年时的迷惘一扫而空，人生开始有了目的。原先低垂的帘幕渐渐拉起，先是打开了一扇扇窗，国人带着浓厚的兴趣睁大眼睛向外看世界。

文学是最早开放的领域之一，开始是一些西方古典名著再版了，现在回想起来，当年王府井书店门前排长队购买外国文学作品的景象实在是匪夷所思。后来，现代派文学也进入国门，为此还发生了一场激烈的辩论，反对者拒斥这类“腐朽的资产阶级垃圾”，主张容忍的一方则将现代派文学归入对资本主义的浪漫主义批判，从而为其谋一席之地。类似的争论还发生过多起，仅审美方面就有关于喇叭裤、披肩发、机场壁画、流行唱法等一场场风波，排斥呢还是包容？这些如今已不成问题的问题当初都曾惊动整个社会。宽容是刚从“文革”走出来的中国人最不习惯的思维方式，重新调整的过程缓慢渐进，大部分痛定思痛的国人正在努力适应。

后来，我们又打开国门，直接走了出去。我们了解世界的愿望正在深入，不再满足于文学。文学写的是人和人性，是一种艺术创作，展现给读者的是投射到作家脑子里的社会，而非真实的社会图解，想要真正了解一个社会，还得去研究这个社会本身。我们也不再满足于道听途说，而是要深入考察那些人类发展中更为本质更具规律性的东西，那就是文明的形态和兴衰。相对于人类产生后的丰富经历和整体命运，我们生活于其中的不过是历史的一个瞬间，一个局部。简言之，当年提出“睁眼看世界”是用中国的眼光去看世界。当我们进入世界后，又慢慢形成一种新的眼光，就是用世界的眼光反观中国，不再坐井观天，而是从井外向井里面仔细观望，从而对井的特点以及它与外部世界的关系有了更客观的认识。最后，我们打破各种人为的界限，尝试着用人类的角度来观察其创造的各种文明。“欲穷千里目，更上一层楼”，视角的改变让我们欣赏到不一样的风景。原来，千差万别的我们都不过是人类这一伟大物种的各个分支，于是我们的心态随之放松，偏执少了，理解多了。

人类文明是浩瀚宇宙所创造的奇迹中的奇迹，且不说人类与黑猩猩分化后几百万年的艰辛进化，仅仅智人出现后历经的漫长岁月便足够我们的先民煎熬。好在终于修成正果，人类在最近的一万年里摆脱野蛮，开创文明，更在近几百年来突飞猛进。一个当初和其他动物也没太大区别的物种竟能变得如此智慧，获得神一般的能量，实在是令人称奇。

然而我们真的完美到无可挑剔了吗？显然还没有，尽管人类达到了今天的境界，却仍然保持着一般动物的许多特点而无法超越，我们终究是不能成为想象中的神本身。人类还将曲折蜿蜒地前行，我们的文明最终会走向哪里？对这个问题我们会永远保持高度的好奇和研究的兴趣。
