Book Abstract

释迦一代时教，弘开于印度，流传遍亚洲。印度后期大乘兴盛，以世亲时代之汇集阐扬，开后世显密通途之学。世亲年代，假定在西历第五世纪之初（东晋时），印度本土佛教之灭亡，则在西历第十二世纪之末（南宋时），历时约八百年之久，其间学说嬗变，初后期中，又多不同。初期二百余年，派别纷纭，显密异趣，大变从来学说之一贯面目。其后五百余年，大师零落，任运敷衍，灿烂余葩，遂归萎谢。印度素乏历史观念，佛教发源于印度，经典记述，史迹阙如。后贤考证虽精，片羽吉光，不无罅漏。在中国开创之十宗，通途皆归于佛，后先辉映，弥增光彩，禅宗当为其首。有谓禅宗乃后期大乘佛法流行时所开创，臆测之说，殆难征信，姑予存疑可也。
印度原来情形
佛所说法，若显若密，皆有典籍可据。唯禅宗传承，缺乏考证资料，学者视为疑案，且有指为伪造者。历来禅宗学者，对此问题，谓为教外别传之旨，皆舍而不论；宗门所传，则以灵山会上，拈花微笑一则公案，为其开端。
世尊在灵山会上，拈花示众，是时众皆默然。唯迦叶尊者，破颜微笑。世尊曰：吾有正法眼藏，涅槃妙心，实相无相，微妙法门，不立文字，教外别传，付嘱摩诃迦叶。
又云：
世尊至多子塔前，命摩诃迦叶分座令坐，以僧伽黎围之。遂告曰：“吾有正法眼藏，密付于汝，汝当护持。”并敕阿难副贰传化，无令断绝。而说偈曰：“法本法无法，无法法亦法。今付无法时，法法何曾法。”尔时，世尊说是偈已，复告迦叶：“吾将金缕僧伽黎，传付于汝，转授补处，至慈氏佛出世，勿令朽坏。”迦叶闻偈，头面礼足曰：“善哉善哉！我当依敕，恭顺佛故。”
据此二说，后则经典有据，前则载籍无征。唯宋王安石曾谓于内廷校阅秘阁图书，得读未经颁行之《般若大梵王问决经》，记述此事，实可征信。并谓经内涉及国运转变之预言颇多，故历代帝王，皆藏之秘府。说者如此，而终乏实证，姑从阙疑而已。
宗门记其传承，溯自释迦以前，历传七佛。迹其七佛名号，于经有据。唯单传付法之事，则又属禅宗传说，群疑繁兴，自释迦以次，迦叶、阿难，递传至二十七代，而有达摩，为印度二十八祖，复为中国禅宗初祖。达摩东来传法，事迹可征，论者崇之。
稽之宗门记载，印度二十八代传承，诸祖行迹，与中国后代禅师，大异其趣。印度祖师，多为三藏大师，经、律、论，靡所不通，戒、定、慧，尤为殊胜。迨其临终迁化，踊身虚空，显现神变，然后付法而寂。其间如龙树、马鸣皆名称普闻，为佛门柱石。若龙树大师，为中国所有八宗之祖，开来继往，德业崇隆，事迹斑斑，众所习知。唯二十四代师子比丘，被罽宾国王所杀，故有谓禅宗在印度传承，于兹已斩，后之传统，多所置疑。据此而论，则中国二祖亦于邺都偿债，事有类同。岂后代传法，都为伪造。凡禅宗大德之有成就者，皆能预知，如二祖所遭遇之事，已先期自晓。师子比丘被害时，断头无血，唯白乳涌高数尺，其功用成就如此，岂仓皇殉道者可比。复有其师悬记，预期付法，早已得人，诚未可以世俗之见，测量之也。
