《武士道》：
武士道，如同它的象征——樱花，是日本土生土长的花朵。它不是历史标本集里一株干枯的古代美德样本，而是我们身边富有力量与美感的鲜活对象。它看不见摸不着，却让道德散发芬芳，至今仍强有力地支配着我们的生活。虽然诞生并抚育武士道的社会环境消失已久，但作为封建制度之子，武士道如遁入远方的星辰，照亮道德之路。在欧洲，伯克先生曾就武士道的西方原型骑士精神之死发表了著名的感人颂词。能够用伯克的母语（英语）来反思武士道，我衷心感到愉快。说来可悲，由于缺乏关于远东的知识，博学如乔治·米勒博士，都不假思索地认为，在东方，从古至今从未有过骑士精神或与其类似的制度。不过，这样的无知情有可原，因为在这位博士著作第三版发行之际，佩里舰队司令正叩打日本锁国主义的大门。十几年后，在日本封建制度弥留之际，卡尔·马克思在其《资本论》中强调研究封建主义社会政治体制的优势，指出封建主义在目前仅存于日本。这一论述唤起了读者的关注。我在此也想邀请西方历史和伦理研究者，以现代日本为背景来研究武士道。对欧洲和日本的封建制度及武士道进行比较研究，的确引人入胜，不过本书的目的不在深入探讨这个问题。我的写作是为了阐明：第一，武士道的起源和背景；第二，武士道的特点和教义；第三，武士道对民众的影响；第四，武士道的持续性和永恒性。对第一点，我仅作简单而粗略的阐述，否则将把读者引入我国历史的曲折小巷里。对第二点的探讨相对详细，因为国际伦理学和比较性格学研究者们，可能会对我们日本人的思维、行为方式尤其感兴趣。其余两点将作为第二点的推论进行阐发。

增订第十版序

自从六年前初版以来，这本小书获得了始料未及的反响：本书在日本九次再版，如今已出版英文第十版，在纽约和伦敦同时发行。与此同时，本书已由德夫先生翻译成马拉地语，由汉堡的考夫曼小姐译成德语，由芝加哥的霍拉先生译成波西米亚语，由伦贝格的《科学与生命协会》译成波兰语。正在准备挪威语版和法语版，汉语译本也在筹划中。另外，《武士道》的若干章节已以匈牙利语和俄语面世。日语方面，已经刊印了堪称注解本的详细介绍。为方便学习英语的学生，我的朋友樱井先生为本书编写了详细的学术注解。我还要感谢樱井先生在其他方面的帮助。

拙著获得各类读者的广泛反响，让我感到十分满足。这说明本书的主题受到全世界范围的关注。尤让人无上荣幸的是，我从官方渠道获悉，罗斯福总统本人曾亲自阅读本书，还分发数十本给他的朋友们。

这一版的修订基本仅限于加入具体例子。令人遗憾的是，我仍未能在书中加入“孝”这一章。而这一概念与“忠”一起构成日本道德的两大车轮。之所以对“孝”难以下笔，并非因为我不知道日本国民本身对这一概念的态度，而是因为我不了解西方人对这一美德的见解。我希望将来能就这一问题及其他问题加以补充。当然，本书所涉及的所有问题，都大有进一步阐发讨论的空间，然而如何扩充本书篇幅，本人尚不得而知。

最后，我要向辛勤阅读原稿、提出有益建议并不断鼓励我的妻子致谢。在此不言谢，这个序言定是不完整而有失公允的。
