I recommend a novel by American author Christina Baker Kline called "The Orphan Train".

From 1854 to 1929, a train carrying tens of thousands of homeless children traveled from the eastern United States to the Midwest. These children stop at various stops along the way and are chosen by others, and the joys and sorrows of life are all determined by the luck of the moment. 91-year-old Vivienne was one of these orphans. By chance, she met Molly, a ill-fated, rebellious outside but kind-hearted girl. The past is surging, and the tragic life experience has caused Vivian to lose too much.
