根据我多年的词汇记忆研究和词汇教学经验，我认为词汇记忆要取得好的效果，有两条是至关重要的：1）英文词汇应该在理解的基础上记忆；2）英文词汇的记忆最好在短期内突破。
英文词汇应该在理解的基础上来记忆，因为每一个词都是有生命的，而不是死的。理解就是从词本身出发，解析词的内在构词逻辑，从而了解词的含义。只有理解了词的内在构词逻辑和含义，才能学会一个词，也才能长久地记住这个词。没有理解的词汇记忆是填鸭式的记忆。我把没有理解词的内在构词逻辑的记忆方法称作逃避式的记忆方法，如心理学中的各种记忆曲线、狂听狂读记忆、阅读记忆、例句记忆、语境记忆、同义反义词辨析记忆、逆序或乱序记忆，等等。这些逃避式的记忆方法都是直接或间接的填鸭武的记忆方法，通过这些方法记忆英文词汇，既痛苦又效果不佳，是不可取的。
只要是理解性的英文词汇记忆方法，都是可取的。但理解性的记忆方法很多，选择何种理解性的记忆方法，对学习者来讲也是一个难题。何谓理解性的记忆方法呢？只要是解读词汇与其释义之间关系的方法，都可算作理解性的记忆方法。理解性记忆方法的优劣评判标准有三条。
