胡里奥·科塔萨尔，阿根廷作家。1914年生于比利时布鲁塞尔，在阿根廷长大，1951年移居法国巴黎。著有长篇小说《跳房子》、短篇小说集《游戏的终结》《万火归一》《八面体》《我们如此热爱格伦达》等。1984年在巴黎病逝。

赛韦罗的阶段

一切仿佛静止了，被冻结在自己那一瞬的行动、气味和形状之中，随即又因一阵阵烟雾和夹杂在抽烟与饮酒间的低语声，改变了模样。贝贝·佩索阿已经在圣伊西德罗的赛马场下了三份注，塞韦罗的妹妹在一块手绢的四角缝了四个硬币，准备等塞韦罗睡着的时候能派上用场。我们人还不算很多，可房子突然显得有点小，一句话和下一句话之间常常会有两三秒钟的停顿，仿佛有个透明的立方体悬在它们之间。在这样的时刻一定会有些人和我一样，觉得这一切虽说都很必要，还是使我们很替塞韦罗、替塞韦罗的老婆和这么多年的至交好友伤心。

我们是大约夜里十一点钟一起到的，伊格纳西奥、贝贝·佩索阿还有我弟弟卡洛斯。我们算是家人吧，特别是伊格纳西奥，他和塞韦罗就在一个办公室上班，进门的时候大家都没太注意我们。塞韦罗的大儿子请我们进到卧室里去，但伊格纳西奥说我们想先在餐厅里待一会儿。屋子里到处都是人，亲朋好友都不想打搅别人，要么在角落里找个地方坐下来，要么在餐桌或是餐边柜旁聚聚，聊聊天，互相打个照面。每过一会儿，塞韦罗的儿女或者妹妹就会送来咖啡或是烈酒，每到这时，大家便都静止下来，仿佛被冻结在自己那一瞬的行动中，记忆中总是会响起那句蠢话：“天使经过了。”可接下来，尽管我会发表几句评论，说那个黑小子阿科斯塔在巴勒莫赛马场连胜两轮，伊格纳西奥也会去摸摸塞韦罗的小儿子鸡冠式的头发，我们都感觉得到，说到底，那种静止还在继续，大家好像都在等候着什么，也许是等候已经发生的事情吧，至于到底会发生什么，那就是另一回事了，也有可能什么都不会发生，就像做了一场梦。可此刻的我们都十分清醒，每过一会儿，虽然我们都不情愿去听，却总能听见塞韦罗老婆的阵阵哭声，那哭声从客厅一个角落传来，怯生生的，有几位至亲在那里陪伴着她。

在这种情况下，通常人们会忘了时间，或者按照贝贝·佩索阿笑着说的，恰恰相反，是时间忘了人们，可没过一会儿塞韦罗的弟弟过来告诉我们说，马上就到出汗的阶段了，我们纷纷把烟头掐灭，一拥而入，进到卧室里。卧室的确能容得下我们这么多人，因为除了一张床和一个床头柜，所有的家具都已经被撤出去了。塞韦罗背后垫了几个枕头，坐在床上，床尾放着一条蓝哔叽布床罩和一条天蓝色的毛巾。这里完全不需要保持肃静，塞韦罗的兄弟们满脸热情地（他们可真是些好人）邀请我们到床跟前来，塞韦罗双手交叉放在膝盖上方，我们围在他的身旁。他最小的儿子，才那么点儿大，也在床边，睡眼惺忪地看着他的父亲。

出汗阶段比较麻烦，因为一直要换床单换睡衣，有时候甚至连枕头都湿透了，死沉死沉的。据伊格纳西奥说，塞韦罗和别人不一样，换作别人早就烦躁得不行了。但塞韦罗一动不动，看也没看我们一眼，顷刻间，汗水就布满了他的脸庞和双手，膝盖那里也显出两大团暗暗的阴影，尽管他的妹妹随时替他擦去脸颊上的汗珠，汗还是不断冒出来，落在床单上。

“这还算是好的了，”伊格纳西奥已经移到了门旁，“他要一动弹的话更糟糕，会和床单粘在一起的，那可就麻烦了。”

“爸爸性子很平和，”说这话的是他的大儿子，“他不是那种会劳烦别人的人。”

“马上就完。”塞韦罗的老婆走了进来，带着件干净睡衣和一套床单。我想，此刻大家一定都对她心怀无上的敬意，因为刚才她还在那里哭泣，现在却能过来照顾她的丈夫，而且她脸上只有安宁、镇静，甚至是活力。我猜想一定是有几位亲戚给塞韦罗说了不少打气的话，这时我已经回到门厅里了，他的小女儿给我端来一杯咖啡。我本来想对她说几句话，给她宽宽心，但这时有旁的人进来了，小曼努埃拉有点儿腼腆，她大概以为我对她有什么意图，我还是别让她有这种念头为好。贝贝·佩索阿可不像我，他在人群间东窜西跑，如入无人之境，现在，他、伊格纳西奥还有塞韦罗的弟弟，和几个表姐妹还有表姐妹的女友结成了一团，在讨论要不要煮上一杯苦苦的马黛茶，这会儿给塞韦罗灌下去，肯定对他大有好处，因为他吃了烤肉，在肚子里不好消化。可到后来什么也没做成，因为我们再次陷入了那种行动冻结的静止时刻（我还是要说，虽然什么变化都没有，我们还是在那里聊着天，挥舞着手臂，不过事情就这样发生了，总得提一提吧，给它找个理由，或是起个名字）。

塞韦罗的弟弟提着一盏乙炔灯走了过来，他在门口对我们预告，蹦跳阶段马上就要开始了。
