《撒马尔罕的金桃》原译《唐代的外来文明》，曾先后在中国社会科学出版社、陕西师范大学出版社出版，获得极大好评，受到广泛关注，至今该书仍作为唐代中外关系史、唐朝文化史等领域的必读书被不断阅读、讨论。它的学术贡献是从博物学角度对于中古史重新研究，这种研究虽受到考古学、西域学、内亚学的影响，但无疑已经成为一种不可忽视的中古史研究方法。

本书的优点在于，数百条译者注纠正了很多原著使用汉籍时的错误，其中一些重要的错误之处，明显地影响了读者对原书的正确理解。更需提及的一点是译者完全还原了原著中征引的汉文原始史料，包括原著中转引的二手材料，甚至一些比较重要的异文，译者都以其专业所长加以说明。

吴玉贵先生精研唐代中外关系史，在突厥史、中古文献等研究上卓有建树。本书为其花费五年精审译成之作，可谓呕心沥血。2014年11月，责编拜访吴先生，先生笑称毕其功于一役，要将中文版问世以来获得反馈、特别是当年删改的部分增订进来。

本书是薛爱华《撒马尔罕的金桃》新修订译本，内含24页彩色图片，另保留原书风格20幅黑白题图。《撒马尔罕的金桃》是西方汉学的一部名著，被视为西方学者研究中国古代社会、古代文化的必读之作。《撒马尔罕的金桃》选取中华民族值得骄傲的朝代——唐代为研究对象，详细研究了当时的世界文化交流和文明引进。内容涉及了唐朝生活的各个方面，家畜、野兽、飞禽、植物、木材、食物、香料、药品、纺织品、颜料、矿石、金属制品、世俗器物、宗教器物、书籍等，共18类170余种，举凡生活所需、日常所用，几乎无所不包。此书不仅展现了大唐时期的社会文化、物质生活的生动画面，为认识唐朝的社会生活史和文化史提供了极有价值的参考，也是了解中华文明和文明交流史的必读书籍。

Author Description

薛爱华（Edward Hetzel Schafer，1913—1991，旧译爱德华·谢弗），美国著名汉学家和语言学家，二十世纪下半叶美国唐代研究乃至整个西方唐代研究的领军人物。1938年获伯克利加州大学学士学位，攻读人类学；1947年获哈佛大学东方语言学博士学位。之后一直任教于柏克莱加州大学，直至1984年退休。曾出任美国东方学会会长，并长期主编《美国东方学会会刊》（JAOS）。

他深受传统欧洲汉学影响，重视历史语言文献的研究（精通十几种古今语言），加之他在民族学、民俗学和人类学方面的丰厚学养，使他的中国中古研究呈现出开阔的视野与多视角融合的特点。他的主要研究领域在中外史学界均享有盛誉，如：唐代的社会文化史，尤其是物质文化（名物）研究、唐代的外来文明、中原汉文化与周边民族文化的融合、道教与文学的关系，尤其是唐诗与道教在唐代文化中的作用等。

译者简介

吴玉贵，男，汉族，1956年10月生，籍贯新疆奇台。1974年参加工作。1985年中国社会科学院研究生院历史系获硕士学位后来进入历史研究所工作。现任马克思主义史学理论与史学史研究室主任、研究员、博士生导师。主要研究方向历史文献学、隋唐史、西北民族史。

主要成果《资治通鉴疑年录》、《突厥汗国与隋唐关系史研究》（获中国社会科学院第三届优秀科研成果二等奖、所优秀科研成果奖）、《突厥第二汗国汉文史料编年辑考》、《中国风俗通史·隋唐五代卷》、《唐书辑校》、《唐代文化》（合著）等专著；发表《西突厥新考》、《试论两件高昌供食文书》、《〈资治通鉴〉记事时间失误略析》、《〈旧唐书〉斠补举例》（获中国社会科学院第六届优秀科研成果三等奖、所优秀科研成果奖）、《〈新唐书〉“四夷传”证误》等论文。
