在历史的长河中，欧洲思想曾受制于宗教正统观念达数百年之久。除了零星的天主教反叛者和被宗教神圣化的帝王，大多数欧洲人一心指望着“死后的生活”，痴往于那个属于虔诚教徒的天堂。为了维系自身的统治权力，教会与世俗政权联合起来，劳动人民因此饱受贵族与僧侣的盘剥。正如一位捷克平信徒所述，劳动人民“被剥夺了一切，饱受蹂躏、压迫、殴打以及掠夺”，在自己的土地上忍受着饥饿与痛苦。

历史学家约翰·赫伊津哈认为，当这样一个时代结束时，“深深的忧虑重重地压在人们心头”。那时，无论是诗歌还是编年史，字里行间无不弥漫着忧愁。这让赫伊津哈回想起一首法国民谣：
