Author Description

欧内斯特·米勒尔·海明威（Ernest Hemingway），美国小说家，“新闻体”小说的创始人。一向以“文坛硬汉”形象著称，是美利坚民族的精神丰碑。1899年，海明威生于美国芝加哥市郊橡胶园小镇。中学毕业后，他在美国西南的堪萨斯《星报》当了6个月的实习记者，受到了良好的训练，对文学创作产生了极强的兴趣。20世纪20年代，海明威开始从事文学创作，主要作品有《在我们的时代里》、《春潮》、《没有女人的男人》、《太阳照样升起》、《永别了，武器》等。其代表作《老人与海》，体现了“人在充满暴力与死亡的现实世界中表现出来的勇气”。1954年，海明威荣获诺贝尔文学奖。

在墨西哥湾①上的一条小船里，一个老人独自垂钓。在度过的整整八十四天当中，他没有钓到一条鱼。而就在开始的前四十天，他的身边还有一个男孩相伴。但就因为这四十天里他没能捉到一条鱼，孩子的父母对便老人说，他现在就是一个十足的“倒霉蛋”，也就是说他倒霉到了极点。于是，男孩听从了父母的安排，选择了另一条船。幸运的是，头一个星期男孩就捕到了三条好鱼。每天回来时，孩子看着老人空空的船，都十分难受。他总会走到岸边，帮老人拿钓索，或者是鱼钩和鱼叉，以及绕在桅杆上的帆。帆上有许多用面粉袋打的补丁，收拢后看上去就像是一面象征永远失败的旗。①此处指的是墨西哥湾暖流。向东流经美国佛罗里达州南端与古巴之间的佛罗里达海峡，沿着北美东海岸向东北流动。墨西哥湾暖流的海水温度要比两旁的海水高许多，最宽处达英里，呈深蓝色，非常壮观，为鱼类群集的地方。本书主人公为古巴首都哈瓦那附近小海港的渔夫，经常驶进湾流捕鱼。

老人身体消瘦而且十分憔悴，脖颈上有几道深深的皱纹。由于热带地区海面上反射的强烈的太阳光，使老人腮帮上出现良性皮肤癌变，产生了许多褐斑，褐斑从脸的两侧一直蔓延下去。老人的双手因为拉钓索而刻下了很深的伤疤。但这些伤疤都是旧伤。它们古老得如同无鱼可捕被侵蚀了的沙漠一般。老人通身带着一股古老的气息，但他那双眼睛却像海水一样蔚蓝，眼神中流露出一种愉快且不肯认输的人生态度。

“圣地亚哥，”当他们从小船停泊的地方爬上岸时，男孩对老人说，“我又可以陪你出海了。家里挣了一些钱。”

老人将捕鱼的技巧传授给了男孩，男孩十分爱他。

“不。”老人说，“你遇到了一条好运气的船。还是跟他们待下去吧。”

“但是你应该记得，有一回你八十七天没有钓到一条鱼，可接下来的三个星期，我们每天都能捕到大鱼。”
