The story of Dr. Joo Gyeong-seop, aka Master Dohae, who created Yong-Yung bamboo salt.
Referred to as "Yong-Yung", Bamboo salt is made by putting sea salt in a bamboo tube, covering it with red clay, and roasting it nine times at a high temperature of up to 2,400 degrees.
"Master Insan", Dr. Kim Il-hoon, who first made bamboo salt, found a method during his lifetime but was unable to complete "Yong-Yung" purple salt due to technical limitations in raising the temperature of the furnace to over 2,000 degrees. Afterward, there was a time when research on bamboo salt was almost stopped, but Master Dohae continued to complete Master Insan's teachings. As a result of learning welding himself and visiting numerous foundries, he discovered a method that could produce ultra-high temperatures of over 2400 degrees, and that is how Dohae's Yong-Yung purple bamboo salt came into the world.
Master Dohae is the direct disciple and THE ONLY successor of Insan Kim Il-hoon. Dohae started his journey with Master Insan back in 1987 when he was an 18-year-old boy at the time. He stayed by Insan Kim Il-hoon's side for 17 years and received all the prescriptions and secrets of Insan medicine.
Dohae said about the time when he was learning the essence of Insan medicine from Insan Kim Il-hoon's side, "I remember being touched by each and every word of the teacher. I tried taking notes, but it wasn't enough, so I later recorded the teacher's words with a tape recorder. There are 120 tapes. He always admonished me not to be a merchant, a swindler, or a thief, and he also told me to keep in mind that the food you eat comes from the pockets of dying people,” he said, adding, “I made these words my motto for the rest of my life.”
Also, "At the time, my teacher and I would roast bamboo salt as soon as we opened our eyes. It was a primitive method of stacking bamboo filled with sea salt in drums and burning firewood. I followed the teacher around the country to get good bamboo, pine trees, mud, and salt." While sharing his memories, he also added that the teaching that "the best bamboo is from Sancheong or Damyang, red clay from Chungcheong Province, and salt from Ganghwa Province or Yeonpyeong Province" has become the principle that Dohae adheres to today.
Dohae says that Yong-Yung bamboo salt has many medicinal benefits, such as improving blood circulation, removing toxins, preventing aging, cell regeneration, improving immunity, and as a natural digestive agent, but one of its greatest strengths is its reducing power. Reducing power refers to the power to return oxidized substances to their original state. A nail soaked in salt water rusts, but a nail soaked in bamboo salt water does not rust, even after 10 years! In general, a high oxidizing power means it is harmful to health, and conversely, a high reducing power can be interpreted as being beneficial to the human body, and Yong-Yung bamboo salt has a higher reducing power than other regular bamboo salts.
The quality of Dohae's Yong-Yung Bamboo Salt is recognized by the government of the Republic of Korea, which was selected as a Master of the Korean Intangible Cultural Heritage, THE ONLY bamboo salt artisan in the country to achieve such an honor. Dohae is still not satisfied with the achievement and is doing his best to improve the product quality and efficacy.
