***回桐壶话说从前某一朝天皇时代，后宫妃嫔甚多，其中有一***衣，出身并不十分高贵，却蒙皇上特别宠爱。

这***衣的父亲官居大纳言之位，早已去世。母夫人也是名门贵族出身，看见人家女儿双亲俱全，尊荣富厚，就巴望自己女儿不落人后，每逢参与庆吊等仪式，总是尽心竭力，百般调度，在人前装体面。只可惜缺乏有力的保护者，万一发生意外，势必孤立无援，心中不免凄凉。
敢是宿世因缘吧，这***衣生下了一个容华如玉、盖世无双的皇子。皇上急欲看看这婴儿，赶快教人抱进宫来。一看，果然是一个异常清秀可爱的小皇子。
大皇子是右大臣之女弘徽殿女御所生，有高贵的外戚作后盾，毫无疑义，当然是人人爱戴的东宫太子。然而讲到相貌，总比不上这小皇子的清秀俊美。因此皇上对于大皇子，只是一般的珍爱，而把这小皇子看做自己私人的秘宝，加以无限宠爱。
小皇子的母亲是***衣，按照身份，本来不须像普通低级女官这样侍候皇上日常生活。她的地位并不寻常，品格也很高贵。然而皇上对她过分宠爱，不讲情理，只管要她住在身边，几乎片刻不离。结果每逢开宴作乐，以及其他盛会佳节，总是首先宣召这***衣。

由此赴皇上常住的清凉殿，必须经过许多妃嫔的宫室。她不断地来来往往，别的妃嫔看在眼里怪不舒服，也是理所当然。有时这桐壶***衣来往得过分频繁了，她们就恶意地作弄她，在板桥上或过廊里放些龌龊东西，让迎送桐壶***衣的宫女们的衣裾弄得肮脏不堪。
有时她们又彼此约通，把桐壶***衣所必须经过的走廊两头锁闭，给她麻烦，使她困窘。诸如此类，层出不穷，使得桐壶***衣痛苦万状。皇上看到此种情况，*** 加怜惜她，就教清凉殿后面后凉殿里的一个***衣迁到别处去，腾出房间来给桐壶***衣作值宿时的休息室。
那个迁出外面去的***衣，***是怀恨无穷。
小皇子三岁那一年，举行穿裙仪式，排场不亚于大皇子当年。内藏寮和纳殿的物资尽行提取出来，仪式**隆重。这也引起了世人种种非难。及至见到这小皇子容貌漂亮，仪态优美，竟是个盖世无双的玉人儿，谁也不忍妒忌他。见多识广的人见了他都吃惊，对他瞠目注视，叹道：“这神仙似的人也会降临到尘世间来！” 这一年夏天，小皇子的母亲桐壶***衣觉得身体不好，想乞假回娘家休养，可是皇上总不准许。这位*** 衣近几年来常常生病，皇上已经见惯，他说：“不妨暂且住在这里养养，看情形再说吧。”但在这期间， ***衣的病日重一日，只过得五六天，身体已经衰弱得厉害了。***衣的母亲太君啼啼哭哭向皇上乞假，这才准许她出宫。即使在这等时候，也得提防发生意外、吃惊受辱。因此决计让小皇子留在宫中，***衣独自悄悄退出。形势所迫，皇上也不便一味挽留，只因身份关系，不能亲送出宫，心中便有难言之痛。***衣本来是个花容月貌的美人儿，但这时候已经芳容消减，心中百感交集，却无力申述，看看只剩得奄奄一息了。
