《青草垛》是对商业化时代铭刻在女性身体上的新的创伤的揭示与痛惜。商业化时代同样是一个充满梦魇和荒诞的时代，把人变成了非人。商业文明的气息无孔不入，甚至连世外桃源的小山村──茯苓庄也不能幸免。村里最灵秀的两个孩子，因为与外界商业文化有了接触，都被不同程度地异化了，成为只有本能的行尸走肉。
《棉花垛》中写到了四个孩子成长的渐变过程，国、乔、小臭子和老有。小臭子这个人物形象凸显了那一典型环境下的典型性格，随着故事的向前推演，人物性格展现的活灵活现，她的爱美、名声的臭和特定环境下的叛逆得以延展，以致最后的死亡，给人以强烈的震撼。
《麦秸垛》中我们可以看到一种对当时生活原生态的真实展示，冀中平原上端村的麦秸垛里，有着一代代男人和女人在那里野合的故事。小说展示了北方的农村两性生活的广阔背景，写出了一个个农村男女的故事。
《午后悬崖》中的韩桂心可谓是坏到极点，她和丈夫沆瀣一气，在暗中搜刮着不属于他们的财产却活得有滋有味。而她向“我”讲述谋害陈非的过程，也并不是发自内的忏悔，只是想以此为条件换回自己做母亲的权利，从而挽回离去的丈夫。甚至这一切都不为，只是为了引人注目，当作新闻炒作的噱头。
《闰七月》是一个女人和三个男人的故事。着重写了一个农村妇女的形象——七月，不写面容，而是多次写"没有欢乐和满足"的脊背，写衣服上的破补丁。她为了糊口，流浪到铁匠铺，成了孟锅泄欲的工具。表现出铁凝对农村妇女命运的思考。
