《人类的群星闪耀时：十四篇历史特写（增订版）》是奥地利作家斯蒂芬·茨威格受欢迎的作品之一，1927年由德国菲舍尔出版社首次出版以来，已有多语种多版本问世，至今在读者中仍有影响。1986年，生活·读书·新知三联书店首次推出中文版，2008年，译者舒昌善先生据德国菲舍尔出版社1997年新版，对中文版做了大量校订，并补译两篇人物特写，使三联版《人类的群星闪耀时——十四篇历史特写》，成为迄今为止全新的中译本。自2008年至今，本书又经译者多次修订，不断打磨，已成为一部名副其实的经典译作。

Author Description

斯蒂芬·茨威格，于1881年11月28日在维也纳出生，自1919年至1933年生活在奥地利萨尔茨堡，1934年迁居英国，1940年获得英国国籍，随后在巴黎、纽约、巴西、阿根廷和乌拉圭等地短期逗留，做巡回演讲。1941年到达巴西里约热内卢，后移居巴西度假胜地彼得罗波利斯，1942年2月22日在该地和妻子一起自尽。

茨威格早年作为一个翻译家和诗人开始其文学生涯，翻译法语诗人艾米尔·维尔哈伦等人的诗作，1901年出版自己诗集《银弦集》。他创作的小说和撰写的人物传记以及《人类的群星闪耀时》脍炙人口，在读者中的魅力经久不衰。在他身后于（1942）出版的《昨日的世界——一个欧洲人的回忆》，是世人了解欧洲文化的经典名著。

有时候，历史是在玩弄数字游戏。因为刚好在罗马被汪达尔人汪达尔人（Vandale）令人难忘地洗劫之后一千年，一场抢掠拜占庭的浩劫开始了。一贯信守自己诺言的穆罕默德二世可怕地履行了自己的诺言。他在第一波屠杀以后就听任自己的官兵大肆抢掠房舍、宫殿、教堂、寺院，男人、妇女、儿童，数以千计的拜占庭人像地狱里的鬼魂在街头巷尾被争先恐后和互不相让地追逐。首先遭到冲击的是教堂，金制的器皿在那里发亮、珠宝在那里闪耀；而当穆罕默德二世的一群官兵闯进一家住房时，他们就会立刻把自己的旗帜挂在屋前，为的是让随后来到的人知道，这里的战利品已统统有主了。所谓战利品，不仅仅是宝石、衣料、黄金、浮财，而且还包括妇女、男人和儿童；女人是苏丹宫殿里的商品，男人和儿童是奴隶市场上的商品。那些躲在教堂里的苦命人，被成群结队地用皮鞭赶了出来。上了年纪的人是没有用的白吃饭的家伙和无法出卖的累赘，因此干脆把他们杀掉了事。那些年轻人像牲口似的被捆绑起来拖走。奥斯曼土耳其官兵在大肆抢劫的同时又进行了最野蛮的毫无人性的破坏。十字军在进行差不多同样可怕的洗劫时残留下来的一些宝贵的圣徒遗物和艺术品被这一群疯狂的胜利者又砸、又撕、又捣，弄得七零八碎。那些珍贵的绘画被烧毁了，最杰出的雕塑被敲碎了，凝聚着几千年的智慧、保存着希腊人的思想和诗歌的不朽财富——书籍被焚毁或者被漫不经心地扔掉了，从此永远消失。人类将永远不会完全知道，在那命运攸关的时刻，那扇敞开的凯尔卡门带来了什么样的灾难；人类将永远不会完全知道，在洗劫罗马、亚历山大里亚亚历山大里亚和拜占庭时，人类的精神世界失去了多少财富。

苏丹怀着好奇和激动的心情细细察看着这座华丽的建筑：高高的穹顶、晶光发亮的大理石和马赛克，精致的弧形门拱，都在黄昏中显得格外明亮。他觉得这座用来祈祷的最最杰出的宫殿不是属于他自己的，而是属于他的真主。于是他随即派人召来一个伊玛目，让他登上布道坛，从那里宣讲教祖穆罕默德的信条。此时，这位奥斯曼土耳其君主面向麦加，在这座基督教的教堂里向三界的主宰者——真主作了第一次祷告。第二天，工匠们就得到了任务：要把教堂里所有过去基督教的标志统统去掉；基督教的圣坛被拆除了，无辜的马赛克被粉刷上石灰；高高矗立在圣索菲亚大教堂顶上的十字架千年以来一直伸展着它的双臂，环抱着人间的一切苦难，现在却砰砰梆梆地倒在地上。

石头落地的巨大声音在教堂里回响，同时传到很远很远的地方。因为整个西方世界都在为这十字架的倒坍而震颤。噩耗可怕地在罗马、在热那亚、在威尼斯回响，像事先发出警告似的巨雷向法国、德国滚去。欧洲万分恐惧地认识到，由于自己置若罔闻，这股劫数难逃的破坏力量竟从那座忘却了的倒霉的凯尔卡门闯了进来，这股破坏力量将要遏制欧洲势力数百年呢。是呀，在历史上就像在人的一生中一样，瞬间的错误会铸成千古之恨，耽误一个小时所造成的损失，用千年时间也难以赎回。
