《儿童与青少年认知行为疗法》：
识别、评估与调整适应不良的思维十分重要，同样，认知行为疗法的核心目标是识别问题行为，以及思考这些行为是如何维持的。简单来说，无论一个行为后面紧接着发生了什么，都会影响这一行为重复的可能性。正强化指通过某一事件、行为、好处或物质奖励增加一个行为发生的概率。负强化指用撤除厌恶刺激的方式来奖励。消退指通过在行为发生时采取非强化方式来减少行为发生的概率或完全消除这一行为，而惩罚指对不想要的行为给予负面的反馈。在认知行为疗法的个案概念化中，治疗师会用所有的基本原理来解释来访者的想法或行为是如何维持的。
先前我们注意到埃伦表现出了对于记忆失败经验的认知偏差，或者说认知偏好，但她的行为也因为她每次面临学业挑战时随后发生的事而得到维持。在教室中，当埃伦说了不当的话或者不好好完成课程任务时，常常会被请出去休息。这样反而让她可以逃离讨厌的体验，因而这种“惩罚”实际却会强化埃伦的不当行为。从条件作用的观点来看，她已经“习得”了某些行为和从讨厌的体验中逃脱之间的联系，这些行为因而得到了负强化。
另一方面，当埃伦偶尔能够把注意力集中在老师布置的任务上，用积极的态度来完成它或是十分努力时，却很少能得到关注。从老师还有其他成年人的角度来看，这些行为没什么——它们仅仅是一个学生应该做的。然而，由于这些良好的行为发生后并没有得到强化，这种行为也就直接消退了。
在认知行为疗法中，行为原理是很重要的，因为它们可以阐明行为是如何形成并得以维持的。行为原理也为如何通过干预改变行为提供了路线图。一旦想要的行为被识别出，认知行为治疗师就可以和来访者或者看护者一起工作，消除维持这些行为的强化物。同理也可以辨别出新行为，当它们发生时给予强化，并且塑造这些行为，让其更频繁地出现。想法和行为并非彼此割裂的，记住这点很重要；相反，认知行为疗法的核心理念认为两者是相互作用的，并且与情绪密不可分。因此，同时考虑想法与行为才是比较明智的，即便当次会谈的主要内容更多聚焦在某一个方面或另一个方面。可以提醒来访者，一部分人由于认知加工错误会更关注那些可以验证消极信念的经验，所以行为实验对这些人来说收效甚微。因此，意识到负性认知是很重要的，即使会谈可能强调的是对行为的干预。例如，假设来访者有蜘蛛恐惧，而整个治疗会谈全程都是在反复地面对罐子里的活蜘蛛，来访者见到蜘蛛的恐惧也随着时间逐渐降低。更重要的是，要和这样的一位来访者确认他是如何看待这一过程的。来访者可能有这样的想法：“我只能在治疗师陪着我的时候面对这只蜘蛛，我一个人的话永远都做不到。”在这个案例中，把成功归于外因，在某种程度上削弱了暴露练习的效果。
同样，行为可以强化负性认知，因而强调行为与适应不良的想法的关系在治疗中是很有益的。例如，有的抑郁的来访者会觉得“我永远都快乐不起来了”，这样的想法会让他们拒绝社交邀请，孤立自己。通过这样的方式，行为的确验证了他们的信念。治疗师引入一些基本的行为干预，如布置一些愉快的、增强型的活动作为家庭作业，或许可以让来访者得到一些反对这一信念的证据。这种技术叫作行为激活，有可能激发能量，增加希望感。简而言之，尽管一些认知行为治疗的方法可能强调行为干预（例如，通过行为教养训练并治疗有破坏性行为障碍的儿童），而另一些更强调认知过程（如用认知疗法治疗抑郁症），但是治疗师认识到想法和行为相互影响的方式方法，无论对于个案概念化还是对于干预都是有帮助的。
