译后记
翻译这本小书堪称是一个等待久远的缘分。很多很多年以前，当我买第一件银饰，一个小小的银挂坠的时候，并不知道以后自己会成为一个不可救药的银子控。也是很多年前——虽然不如做银子控那么久——当我开始痴迷于欧洲史，尤其是英国史的时候，也并不知道自己会成为这样一本书的译者。

这本书，是银子与历史、生活世界的有趣结合。古埃及有个传说，说众神的骨头是银子做的，而这本书，是从银子这个特别的角度切入，以大英博物馆的馆藏银器为基础，来描述英国、世界，以至全人类的生活史。银子构成了这部小历史纤细、别致而美丽的骨骼。

英国作为一个曾经的“日不落”老大帝国，历史久远，胸怀浩瀚，然而细想来，它经历的每一场重要转折，个中似乎都闪烁着银子的光泽。起初，英伦三岛在地理和文化意义上，都只是世界边缘。公元前54 年之后，古罗马人顽强入侵，他们带来政治制度、经济管理，带来统治与抗争，也带来了手艺精湛的金属匠人。本书中提到的多件银器、多个宝藏，都产自古罗马时期。它们的工艺之精美绝伦，至今让人叹为观止。罗马衰落，8 世纪前后，维京人乘船而来。维京人不像罗马人那样是殖民者和建设者，他们更多是劫掠者，银子是他们重要的劫掠目标之一。维京人带来的战乱，也是书中提到的多个宝藏被埋下的原由。15 世纪英法百年战争结束以后，以亨利八世、伊丽莎白一世等不世出的君主为主倡的英国宗教改革，既深刻塑造了英国人自己的民族意识，也深刻影响了银器文化。18 世纪，伴随着工业革命的完成，在全球推动政治经济扩张的同时，在文化上，英国也渐成胸怀天下之国，这一点，从今天大英博物馆的馆藏之丰之广可见一斑。银器自然是其中不可或缺的一部分。从北非的埃及，到北欧的斯堪的纳维亚半岛，从中东的伊斯兰地区，到远东的中国、泰国、日本，大英博物馆中的银器馆藏，不折不扣，形成了一部全人类的器物生活史。而本书，正是通过对这些银器的欣赏探察，描摹出不同地域人们的经济、文化、宗教及精神样态。因此，这本书堪称是一部生动有趣而精致的人类微型生活史。

作为最重要而基本的两种贵金属，金子和银子，同样承载财富与野心，表达人类的物质欲望和精神愿望。只是与金子向来享有的华丽优崇、张扬耀目的光华不同，银子虽然也有自己的明耀光泽，但它更沉静、内敛、细腻，如夜晚的湖水与月光。银子更像是人类的精神内里和不善言说的语言背面。本书中有提到，在历史上，有的地域由于宗教信仰的原因，人们会觉得佩戴黄金饰物过于夸耀冒犯，他们因此创造出了安详别致、有时繁复的乌银工艺。这是银子与人类文化精神最美好的契合之一。银子不像金子那样有时会冒犯和灼伤人类隐秘深刻的内心，只会安静地照亮和表达。在悠久的人类生活史中，这正是银器工艺的内核所在，也是本书之所以吸引译者的重要原因。

翻译本书的过程很是愉悦。本书作者关于银子的知识渊博丰富，他自己同时也是位银器匠人，对银子的特别质感及美感有天然的敏锐。这两者结合，形成了本书简洁明快、鱼跃鸟飞般的叙事风格。谈及与银子相关的宗教文化、经济政治，作者皆信手拈来，三言两语即道清要害，神话传说、趣闻轶事亦如银器花纹般镶嵌其间。考虑到书中涉及的一些名词和事物虽然在银器业界或博物馆界耳熟能详，但本书的许多读者可能并不是特别清楚，故译者在翻译的过程中，添加了若干译注。

对于有些人来说，银子不仅仅是物质，它更因其特别的光泽和设计而与观者或用者的精神世界发生奇妙的勾联。多年以后，译者渐近中年，生存日益喧哗而内心日益缄默，过去集下的许多银子也渐被束之高阁，因为疏离肌肤之亲而锈迹生起。翻译此书的过程中，常有很多悠远细微的往事浮上心头。是的，与银子相关的事物，常常是悠远的，细腻的，不像现实本身那样有浮光艳色。
