而当你对我做出相同的事时，我会用一个三岁小孩的成熟度来响应，而且用急性子和坏脾气来当作我的两大武器。我永远也不会记得，我们只是两个尽力想做到最好的普通人。我会把你当作我唯一的快乐源泉。最后我才终于成长并了解到亲密关系的真正目的。”如果是这样的誓词，我就可以轻松地做到了！

在进入一段新的亲密关系时，我们会把过去的旧痛、旧伤也一并带去。小时候我们会把没治愈的创伤埋在心底，以免感到痛苦。为什么呢？除了不想感到痛苦，还有一个原因——幼时的创伤有时难以承受，如果不把它除去，我们会觉得自己好像要死掉了。

我还记得小时候，有一次不小心把狗链弄丢了。我父亲勃然大怒，打我耳光而且把我骂得狗血淋头，足足骂了一个多小时。打耳光还不要紧，痕迹当天就褪去了，但心灵的创伤却不会这么快就痊愈。我希望父亲原谅我、爱我，但他并没有。我好难过，简直心都碎了。然而，过了几小时，我就在屋外跑来跑去，跟哥哥嬉笑玩耍了。也许你会以为是小孩子对痛苦的抵抗力较强，所以我很快就忘了那件不愉快的事，继续过我的日子。然而，多年之后我却又想起了这件事情，而且重新感受到六岁时被父亲打骂所造成的心灵创伤，再一次感到心碎。

身为一个治疗师，我知道我从小到大处理伤痛的方法和大多数人投有什么不同。我们都经历过令人心碎的痛，而如果不处理它，可能会对我们的生活造成影响。于是，我们在心里开辟出一个储藏室——也就是潜意识——并把所有压抑的痛苦都丢进去锁起来，然后忘记有过这回事。

一九九九年我撰写《亲密关系》时，目的是希望提供给人们一张路线图，引领人们穿越亲密关系的复杂景致，并主要着眼于亲密的伴侣与婚姻关系。如今十五年过去了，我很开心这些知识仍然有帮助。对我来说，这本书不只是本自助手册或个人发展指南，也是我与妻子素梅的个别经历，或作为一对伴侣时所得到的教训以及突破。虽然书中已提供了许多范例与准则，但仍有一些精华观点，在我作为一位丈夫、父亲以及一个独立个体的时候，为我提供了很大的帮助。在此我想要指出其中一些观点，并在本书中增加一些新的体悟。

责任的重要性：责怪、批评与指责是人类防御机制的关键要素。责怪他人、批评他人行为、指责他人不愿改变，其实是一种轻而易举的手段，能够简单地利用道德批判，将自己提升到一个高于他人的位置，也使我们摆脱了自身的不安。然而，责怪、批评与指责的态度最终只会加强自我的受害者意识。受害者常感到无力、无助、无价值且无法自我满足。他们的防卫机制常常是自我否定，并将自己置于一个道德正确的位置。当我们坦然面对内在的受害情绪时，我们将有机会更具有意识地正视这份感觉，并了解这仅是一种感受，而非事实。责怪、批评与指责也终将不再发生。
亲密关系是一种完美设计：在亲密关系中，所有的一切都是重要的部分，即使是令人不悦的冲突与不适的情境。当你继续在感情中成长时，你也开始懂得欣赏你跟伴侣之间所发生的任何事情。当你拒绝接受不悦与不适时，你也不再看见这些事物所能带来的启示，也将使你无法看清正在发生的事物。
绝对的爱是无条件的：通常我们在亲密关系中所谓的爱，事实上是由于伴侣的行为所带来的满足感，或对于重要感与归属感的需求。真正的爱是无条件的，完全与任何情境和情势无关，无法从他人那儿获取，也非由他人的行为而触发，而是因为你就是你！一段关系的目的不是给予与接受彼此的爱，而是帮助你了解你自己就是一直以来所寻找的爱。
伴侣的目的：如同上述所说的，你的伴侣不是你的爱与幸福的来源。满足你的期待与使你开心不是他们的职责，但你的伴侣的确在你的生活中扮演了三个重要的角色，尤其在面对情感上的成熟与唤醒真实自我的时候。这时你的伴侣将会依所需而扮演这三种角色之一：一面镜子，让你看见引发你关注的不舒服感；一名老师，在你探寻真实自我的时候，激励与启发你；一名“玩伴”，开启并陪伴你一段生命的旅程。
