Author Description

詹姆斯·沃森（James Watson， 1928- ），苏格兰裔美国人。15岁入芝加哥大学，兴趣在观察鸟类，后志趣转向遗传学。1948年初，沃森开始在印第安纳大学卢里亚指导下攻读博士。1951-1953年，沃森先在哥本哈根，再转到剑桥卡文迪什实验室做博士后研究员。在剑桥，他和克里克发现了DNA 双螺旋结构，并为此获得诺贝尔奖。1988-1992年参与美国国家卫生研究院人类基因组计划的制订。

本书记述的是阐明基本遗传物质DNA结构的故事，其笔法在各方面都是独特的。沃森约我写前言，对此我深感荣幸。
首先，此书在科学价值上引起人们的关注。克里克和沃森发现了DNA的结构，这一发现及其以后在生物学方面引起的影响，乃是20世纪科学界重大的事件之一。受其鼓舞而开展的科研项目，数量之大是十分惊人的。这项成果促使生物化学发生了一场革命，而生物化学本身就是一门使科学改观的学科。我和其他人一直在敦促作者撰写他的回忆录，因为很多事情他至今仍然记忆犹新。我们知道这些事件对于撰写科学史又是何等重要！书写成以后，其内容大大超出了预料。尤其是后面几章，简直就是一部结构严谨、情节动人的剧本。它把新概念的诞生描绘得栩栩如生，把许多扣人心弦的场面逐步推向全剧的高潮。我不知是否还有别的著作能够使读者如此休戚相关地与研究者一道分担他的疑虑、分享他的奋斗和最后胜利的喜悦。
书中记述的故事又深刻说明了研究工作者可能陷入的进退维谷的处境。他知道有个同行在某个问题上已经工作了多年，并且积累了大量难得的资料，由于知道成功就在眼前，这些资料并未公开发表。他看到过这些资料，并有充分的理由相信，他想象中的一种研究新方法，或者说仅仅一种新观点就能使问题迎刃而解。在这个时候，如果他提出同对方合作，可能会被认为是想捞一点外快。他应该单枪匹马地去干吗？很难判断一个重要的新观点究竟真的是一个人独出心裁想出来的，还是在同别人交谈中不知不觉地吸收来的。鉴于这种困难，在科学家中间逐渐形成一种不成文的默契，大家不去侵犯同行在某个研究领域中的选定课题。但是，有一定的限度。当竞争不止来自一个方面的时候，就不能再踌躇不前了。在解决DNA结构的过程中，这种进退维谷的困境显得尤为突出。由于考虑到伦敦国王学院（KCL）的威尔金斯长期耐心的研究，以及剑桥的克里克和沃森最后出色地并很快地解决了DNA的结构问题，1962年在颁发诺贝尔奖时，才使所有与此有关的人皆大欢喜。
最后，本书不仅讲了科学，也讲了人。从故事中可以看到，欧洲特别是英国给一个来自美国的年轻人留下的印象。作者善于用佩皮斯式的坦率笔法进行写作。书中涉及的人们应该以一种谅解的精神阅读此书。请记住，他的这本个人记述并不是一部历史，而仅仅是对历史有点贡献的一种自传式作品。这部历史总有一天要写出来的。正如作者本人所说，此书乃是一种印象记录，并非历史事件纪实。实际上，很多事情比他那时看到的要复杂，而当事者的动机比他当时想象的要单纯得多。但是，必须承认作者对人类弱点的直觉洞察力确实入木三分。
作者曾将手稿给我们几个书中涉及的人看过。凡是与历史事实不符之处，我们都提出了不少修改意见。但以鄙人拙见，此书不宜修改太多。因为以生动活泼和坦诚直爽的笔调记录下来作者当时的印象是此书趣味盎然的根本特色。
