[英]彼得·格林（1924-）是德克萨斯大学奥斯汀分校古典学荣休教授，曾任爱荷华大学古典学兼职教授。著作有《从亚历山大到亚克兴》（Alexander to Actium）、《希腊化时代简史》（The Hellenistic Age: A Short History）、《亚历山大与希腊化时代》（Alexander The Great and the Hellenistic Age）等，译著有《卡图卢斯诗歌集》（The Poems of Catullus）、《伊利亚特》（The Iliad）、《奥德赛》（The Odyssey）等。

译者简介

詹瑜松，本科毕业于南开大学，现为复旦大学世界史博士生，主要研究古希腊政治史、希腊波斯关系史，兼及希腊罗马世界里的东方秘教。

前言
在一篇发表在爱荷华古典协会的新闻通讯中的非常富有启发性的自传性访谈里，彼得·格林曾把自己形容为“本质上我是一位作家”。他接着引用哈姆雷特对“您在研究什么，殿下？”这一问题的回答，哈姆雷特回答说：“言语，言语，言语。”就是言语！对格林来说，不仅是英语，还有拉丁语、古代和现代希腊语、德语、意大利语以及法语。他在著名的卡特豪斯公学接受古典学的训练，但是二战期间他在英国的远东军队中服役数年，这打断了他的正常教育。战争结束时，他成为了剑桥三一学院古典学系的研究生，在那里他于1954年获得了博士学位。

近年来出版了一大批的亚历山大传记，其中多数是为了满足大学本科生市场的课程需求。这些著作主要是重述国王的政治和军事功绩——用普鲁塔克的话来说，是历史但不是传记。有些批评者反驳说格林经常越出古代史料所允许的范围，对此他在本版的序言中有详细的回应。在其初版近四十年之后，彼得·格林的《马其顿的亚历山大》依旧是对这位著名国王的最博学、最优美全面的现代评述。
