我有充分的理由相信，小王子来自小行星B612。一位土耳其天文学家在一九九年有一次曾用望远镜观察到这颗小行星。

00因为我不喜欢人们毫不经意地读我的书。讲述这些记忆时，我觉得非常伤感。我的朋友带着他的小羊已经走了六年了。我在此描述他，正是不想忘了他。忘记朋友是件伤心的事。并非所有的人都曾有过朋友。而我也有可能变成大人们那样，只关心数字。也正是为此，我买了一盒颜料和一些铅笔。在我这个年纪，重拾画笔真难啊，因为除了六岁时画的开膛与不开膛的蟒蛇外，我从未做过其他的尝试。当然，我要尽力去画一些尽可能相像的画像。但我对成功并无十分的把握。某一张画得不错，另一张却一点也不像。我对身高有时也会弄错，这张画儿上的小王子太高了，那张画儿上的又太矮了。他衣服的颜色我也弄不太清。于是，我便这样那样的尝试着勉强地画着。最后，我恐怕会画错某些重要的细节。而这一点，就得原谅我了。我的朋友从来不做解释。他可能以为我和他相似相通。但遗憾的是，我无法透过盒子看到羊。我也许和大人们有点相似。我恐怕是老了。

每天，我都得知一些有关那个星球以及他的离开、旅行方面的事情。这都是在偶尔的思索中慢慢得知的。就这样，第三天，我了解了猴面包树的悲剧。
这一次还是多亏了羊，因为小王子好像突然极为担忧地问我：
“羊吃灌木，这是真的，对吧？”
“是的，是真的。”
“啊！我真高兴。”
我弄不明白为什么羊吃灌木那么重要。不过小王子又补充说：
“那么，它们也吃猴面包树叶儿？”
我提醒小王子注意，猴面包树不是灌木，而是像教堂那样高大的树，而且，即使他带去一群大象，这成群的大象也吃不完一棵猴面包树。
一群大象的念头让小王子笑了起来：
“那就得把大象叠罗汉了……”
不过，他又非常明智地说：
“猴面包树在长大前，也是从小树长起的。”
“对极了！不过，你为什么要让你的羊吃小猴面包树呢？”
他用“咳！您想啊！”来回答我，就好像这是显而易见的事。于是，我费尽心思才独自弄懂这个问题。
在小王子的星球上，正如在所有的星球上一样，有好草也有坏草。因此，也就有好草的好种子及坏草的坏种子。但种子是隐而不见的。它们沉睡在大地的隐秘处，直到某一粒种子异想天开地苏醒过来……于是，它伸伸懒腰，先怯怯地朝着太阳生长出一根迷人的小嫩芽。如果是萝卜或玫瑰的嫩芽，倒也可以任它们长大。但如果是一棵有害植物，那么，一旦辨认出，便应将它立即拔掉。然而，在小王子的星球上存在着可怕的种子……这就是猴面包树种子。星球的大地会因此而受到侵害。一棵猴面包树，如果太晚才着手，便永远无法摆脱它了。它会占满整个星球。它的根会给星球穿孔。而如果星球太小，猴面包树又太大，它们就能使星球爆炸。
“这是纪律性的问题，”小王子后来对我说，“当人们清晨洗漱完毕后，就应该仔细地为星球梳妆打扮。在刚出芽时，猴面包树和玫瑰花很相像，而一旦分辨出是猴面包树，就应该立即拔掉。这应该定期去做。这工作挺无聊，但却很容易。”
一天，他建议我好好画一张漂亮的图画，以便让我的星球上的孩子们能了解这些。他对我说：“如果有一天他们去旅行，这将有助于他们。有时，拖延工作是无伤大碍的。但如果涉及的是猴面包树，那就是灾难了。我知道有一颗星球，上面住着一个懒人，他忽视了三棵灌木……”
