第一章上古文学
第一节文学艺术的起源
文学艺术起源于生产劳动。它的产生一直要追溯到人类生活的最原始阶段。原始人在其劳动的过程中，由于筋力的张弛和工具运用的配合，自然地发出劳动的呼声。这种呼声具有一定的高低和间歇，在一定时间内，或者重复而无变化，或者变化而有规律，这样就产生了节奏。这种简单的节奏就是音乐、舞蹈的节拍和诗歌韵律的起源。从文献来看，文学艺术起源于劳动是可以得到很好的说明的。例如《淮南子，道应训》说：“今夫举大木者，前呼‘邪许’，后亦应之，此举重劝力之歌也。”这几句话是根据《吕氏春秋·淫辞篇》来的，“邪许”本作“舆滹”。所谓“举重劝力之歌”，就是指人们集体劳动时，一倡一和，借以调整动作、减轻疲劳、加强工作效率的呼声。举重时是这样，舂碓时也是这样。《礼记》的《曲礼》和《檀弓》二篇都说：“邻有丧，舂不相。”“相”是送杵声，其作用与举大木者的呼“邪许”正复相同。再从现实生活来看，水手的摇橹和拉纤，建筑工人的打夯，码头工人的搬运，都可以听到集体的、个人的或彼此互相唱和的歌声，音调和谐而有节奏。从这些地方我们极其明显地看到劳动和文学艺术的密切关系，而且那种节奏是在劳动时的特殊条件下产生的、规定的。这就再一次有力地证明了文学艺术起源于劳动这一论断的正确性。
原始人在劳动中发出的有节奏的呼声，虽然只是一种声音，没有任何歌词，但那种自然而健康的韵律实际上就是诗歌的起源，也是文学创作的开始。关于这，鲁迅更说得很明白：
人类在未有文字之前，就有了创作的，可惜没有人记下，也没有法子记下。我们的祖先的原始人，原是连话也不会说的，为了共同劳作，必须发表意见，才渐渐的练出复杂的声音来。假如那时大家抬木头，都觉得吃力了，却想不到发表。其中有一个叫道“杭育杭育”，那么这就是创作。……倘若用什么记号留存了下来，这就是文学；他当然就是作家，也就是文学家，是“杭育杭育”派。

但虽然如此，那种有声无义的韵律究竟不是诗歌。真正有意义的诗歌又是怎样产生的呢？原来原始人在长期的劳动中，由于大脑和发音器官的发达，逐渐产生了思维和语言。当然语言在最初也不过是简单的呼喊，后来才逐渐发展为音节分明、以至于能够作为人类的思想交流和社会交际的工具。这时候如果在呼声的间歇中随意添上一些语言，即使是最简单的语言，如《候人歌》那样：“候人兮猗！”（《吕氏春秋·音初篇》）只是在“兮”、“猗”的呼声上添了两个词。然而这种表意的语言一旦同具有节奏性的呼声或叹声结合时，便成为有意义的诗歌。当然，这仅仅是原始的诗歌形式。后来还有不少民歌保存这种形式，句末常常带有呼叹作用的声符，如“兮”、“猗”之类。但这个声符的作用已经不如原始诗歌组成部分那么重要。社会生活日益复杂，语言日益发展，这种诗歌形式，特别是文人作品中作为语助词的呼叹词，其作用几乎降到可有可无的地位。间有保留这种原始性的，有如梁鸿的《五噫歌》，每句末都用一个感叹词——“噫”字，那是很少的。这样的结尾形式，如果我们不从原始诗歌的发展上去探讨，那就不好理解。它并不是一种新形式，而是原始形式的遗留，作者有意识地加强诗歌句尾的节奏性和呼叹作用而已。《诗经》中的《麟之趾》、《驺虞》等篇以及曹丕的《上留田行》都是属于这一类型的。
