《竺可桢全集第1卷》收录竺可桢1916—1928年的文章、讲演词、工作报告、会议提案、书信等68篇，另有专著3种。这些文稿比较集中地发表在《科学》《东方杂志》《史地学报》等刊物上。
1910年，竺可桢考取第二批留美“庚款生”，1913年入哈佛大学研究院攻读气象学。1918年以题为《远东台风的新分类》的论文获得博士学位。在留美期间，竺可桢成为中国科学社的首批社员，并开始参与《科学》杂志的编辑工作，撰写过大量通俗科学文章。在中国科学社后来每年一次的年会上，也多有演讲和论文发表。
回国后的竺可桢，先在武昌高等师范学校任教，1920年秋应聘南京高等师范学校，恰逢该校转制。自1921年起，他在东南大学创建了中国大学中的第一个地学系，在这里为教学需要而编写的《地理学通论》和《气象学》两种讲义，成为中国现代地理学和气象学教育的奠基性教材。
1925年1月，东南大学发生“易长风潮”，竺可桢于本年夏离校，到上海任商务印书馆编译所史地部部长，潜心著述，接连发表了《论江浙两省人口之密度》《北宋沈括对于地学之贡献与纪述》《论以岁差定〈尚书·尧典〉四仲中星之年代》等重要文章。1926年到南开大学任地理学教授，于此就地取材，成文《直隶地理的环境和水灾》。同年作为中国科学社的代表入组中国代表团，赴日本东京参加了第三届泛太平洋学术会议。
1927年夏，竺可桢回到南京，就任第四中山大学（易名于东南大学，后又改称中央大学）地学系主任。同年秋，在中国科学社第十二次年会上被选为理事长。
自1927年11月起，竺可桢参与中央研究院筹备工作，1928年2月成立气象研究所，任所长。而真正反映他履新赴任的文字则始于1929年。
入编于本卷的《地理学通论》和《气象学》两书具有特殊历史价值，其中的旧译名于今多已弃用，编者对有关译名作了今译对照，以利读者查考。
1979年出版的《竺可桢文集》和原竺可桢研究会收集的文献为本卷工作打下了重要基础。本卷文稿的普查和整理校订工作主要由李玉海承担，大部分文章请陈学溶先生校审。交出版社之前的校审定稿工作由樊洪业负责。
《竺可桢全集第1卷》循“存真”宗旨，力求保存竺可桢文稿历史原貌，有关编订规则之大要，详见《编例》。

Author Description

竺可桢，1890年生，浙江上虞人。1910年赴美国留学。1913年毕业于伊利诺伊大学农学院。1918年获哈佛大学研究院地学系博士学位。同年回国。后任武昌高等师范学校教员、东南大学地学系主任、中央研究院气象研究所所长、浙江大学校长。建国后，历任中国科学院副院长，中国科协副主席，中国气象学会理事长、名誉理事长，中国地理学会理事长。是第一至三届全国人大常委。著有《中国气象概论》、《物候学》、《气象与农业相互关系》等。1974年2月7日逝世。
竺可桢留学回国后，在东南大学创办了我国最早的地理系。1927年筹建了中央研究院气象研究所，并在全国布设了四十几个观测台站进行地面和高空观测，开始天气预报工作。
任浙江大学校长期间，他倡导“求是”校训，实行民主办学，提倡学术自由，使浙大在教育质量、学术研究和学校规模上都有长足的发展，崛起为中国著名大学之一，英国科学家赞誉为“东方剑桥”。
建国后为中国科学院的创建作出了重要贡献。领导并指导了我国自然区划综合考察、国家大地图集编纂、地学规划制定、自然科学史研究等工作。在物候学研究中有创造性的贡献。发表的《论我国气候的几个特点及其与粮食作物生产的关系》论文，阐明了我国优厚的气候资源和开发利用的正确途径。《二十八宿起源之时代与地点》一文，基本上解决了国际上100多年的争论，得到国内外学术界的高度评价。
他还是我国自然资源综合考察事业的倡导者和奠基人，是“可持续发展”思想与实践的先觉先行者。
